The original Haunting was great. You never saw anything, but it scared the poop out of you by using your own imagination against you. Same, to a degree, with the original Halloween. There wasn't that much actual slicing and dicing on screen, but the ability of the movie to create suspense and use your imagination was terrific.
Movies that do nothing more than rack up body counts in varying ways aren't really horror movies to me. I don't get off on gore like some folks do, and envelope just keeps getting pushed further and further on the gore meter. That REALLY does nothing for me, and hardly qualifies as suspenseful since you know people are going to die, lots of them, in horrible ways.
