I was bored and dicking around on IMDB and saw that a Childs Play Remake is coming out next year, along with Scream 4, and Halloween 3. My question is, are you tired of all these reimaginings and series reboots? I think Rob Zombie soured me on the whole thing. The only good ones have been the Dawn of the Dead remake and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre remake. It seems like the horror genre is really struggling for new ideas. Thoughts?

I liked the following remakes: Texas Chainsaw Massacre, The Hills Have Eyes (not part 2), and Halloween 1. I was not a fan of the rest, though. I wouldn't call Scream 4 a remake... just a continuation of the sequel. However, I don't like there being 4 Scream movies, though. I thought the whole play on horror films was about there always being a "trilogy". Having 4 kind of ruins that. I will not watch the Child's Play remake, but I will watch Scream 4 and Halloween 3 (and probably add both of those to my collection, since I have the other three Screams and all the Halloweens.

The 1st Halloween redo and the first Friday the 13th redo were tolerable to me. I am just waiting for that truly original horror movie to come out.

I vaguely recall reading that Scream 4 is going to be kind of a passing of the torch from the character, Sydney, to a cousin or something...and they are going to a trio of movies around the next generation (so to speak). Whatever, I really liked Scream, especially at the time because horror was basically dead. Not sure it ever came back, or came back better, or whatever, but 2 and 3 sucked ass anyway. I'm sure I'll watch them regardless.

Thats the thing, I like seeing new takes and at least attempts at thickening the plots. But I don't know the last "good" horror movie that wasn't a remake.

I think Scream was the last really good idea for a horror movie...then came the spinoffs like I Know What You Did Last Summer

EDIT: I forgot about The Strangers...I really liked that one.

I know that I'm the minority on this issue, but I don't think Slice & Dice moves are "horror".

So far, the movies listed aren't scary. Maybe a few startling/unexpected moments, but nothing spooky.

I'd like to see new updated versions of movies like "Ghost Story" or "The Exorcist" or "The Changeling".

I think "slice & dice" is a form of horror movies. I get what you are saying though....they don't have the overall scare of some movies.

Some of the best horror movies are those that bring some psychological element to the table. Psycho, Jaws and more recently the Saw series, though Saw is getting old too I suppose.

Rob Zombie killed Halloween for me. Most of these remakes aren't that great. I have enjoyed the remakes of Dawn of the Dead, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and The Hills Have Eyes though, just to name a few.

I don't know if it is being old or just being jaded, but I can't actually remember being "scared" by a horror movie for a long time. The Strangers was creepy and I enjoyed it - good call whoever brought that one up - but I don't know that I was scared in the way that Halloween scared the fuck out of me for 20 years after I saw it the first time.

The remakes are just being beaten to death.


IMO, there have only been a few good ones.. Dawn of the Dead, The Hills Have Eyes, TCM (2nd one SUCKED), Amittyville Horror, Nightmare on Elm Street and Halloween (again, 2nd one sucked).

If you take into account all of the ones that were awful, it's just getting old.

Best horror movie i watched recently was The Descent.

Came out in like 2005 i think lol.

I'm actually looking forward to Scream 4. I really enjoyed Scream and the other two movies in the triliogy were pretty good too. I liked the idea of a trilogy, but I'm fine with them making as many Scream movies as they can, as long as it continues to be done well.

The Halloween series, even though a couple of them aren't that great, is probably my favorite series of movies. The original is just awesome...one of the greatest horror movies ever. Zombie's remake of Halloween was pretty good, but his rendition of Halloween II pissed me off. He completely ruined it. Halloween III, in the original set of movies, kind of took a break from the Michael Myers storyline. I hope that Zombie doesn't go that route too. I'll definitely be interested to see how it goes.

THe ironic thing about Scream 4 and this "passing of the torch" was that the premise of the original film was a wink at the slasher movies. Remember how the one character was the slasher film buff and he would guide the rest of the cast into what happens in slasher films?

I agree with CenterBHS, a scary flick to me is not necessarily a slash and dash. Some of the scariest, creepiest films in my opinion are movies like Pet Cemetary and The Shining. Not because they are gross (it was at times) but because they were so suspenseful.

That's definitely a good thing. I'll be interested to see what direction the film takes. If it's like the first Halloween III, it's probably gonna be awful. That one, along with Halloween Resurrection are the two movies in the original series that I didn't really care for. That stuff happens though when there are so many different people involved over such a long period of time.

Just read a little bit about the new Halloween III. Not much information about it that I coud find, but apparently it's gonna be in 3D. Might be kinda cool.

Oh...and I just read through the Halloween 3 article...it is a 3D movie, not sure I like the idea with gimmicks for this movie.

Friday the 13th Part III was in 3D. I remember seeing it in the movie theatre. There were scenes were Jason threw an axe and a few other spots that made you jump a little. Of course, 3D is so much better quality than it was at the time.

haha....I didn't see your post. I did not like My Bloody Valentine 3D, so I am skeptical of the 3D in horror films.

Creepshow 2 is the one with the tar in the lake...right? I love the cheesy 80s horror flicks.

Yeah I know they are listed as horror, I'm was just talking about my own personal preferences.

Now, I can get into a slasher film is there was actual spookiness involved, but that just seems to be a forgotten element in today's "horror" films.
