So speaking of books, I thought this story would be apropos:

I live in Queens and take an express bus into Manhattan each morning (except for the nights I stay over with BigAppleBuckeye in Brooklyn). This morning I happen to sit down next to a man who appeared to be about 60 or so. I'm resting my eyes most of the ride and generally minding my own business. The man says nothing to me the whole ride until about 20 minutes in when he remarks "I remember you were reading this book called The Sheltering Sky," or something to that effect. He then goes on to tell me how we went out and bought the book and was reading it as we speak.

I thought this whole scenario was quite odd, since I had finished reading the aforementioned book about three weeks ago. I don't know if I should be flattered or creeped out by this whole thing. I guess the man was nice enough, so I won't worry, but it did weird me out a bit.

Wicked is a good one. Have you or are you planning on going to the musical? After you read the book if you haven't seen it I suggest you check it out sometime.

As for me I'm reading a few ohama poker books:

Farha on Omaha: Expert Strategy for Beating Cash Games and Tournaments
Championship Omaha by Tom McEvoy and T. J. Cloutier
Pot Limit Omaha 8 Revealed (Volume 1) by Dan Deppen and Anna Paradox

one of my literature classes at OSU had this book assigned with four other of McCarthy's novels. Child of God, All the Pretty Horses, No Country for Old Men, and The Road.

Blood Meridian was one of the better ones. Pretty good stuff.

Having just retired, I had said on here that one of the things I would like to do would be to have the opportunity to do some reading. For the first three weeks, I have been consumed with massive yard work including mowing, weeding, cutting back shrubs, removing "accidental" trees and assorted other tasks that are finally approaching finished status. I have also been doing a lot of bike riding but the doctor wants me to calm down for a couple of weeks and cut out the bike. Consequently I need to get started reading. Someone recommended a book entitled "Sh*t My Dad Says" or something along those lines and it intrigued me to the point of going out and finding a copy. Today will be that day. Of course, in two weeks I will be back out on my bike but to have free time is still a great blessing even if I seem to be more consumed now than before I retired.

Illiad- This one has taken me some time. I decided to read through all the classics that I never read in High School and College. I most of the way through this one, and enjoy it, it's just very hard to get myself to pick it up most days...
Zeitoun by Dave Eggers- I'm about 100 pages in, and so far it's a really good narrative about Hurricane Katrina...
The Omnivore's Dilemma by Michael Pollan- Interesting look at food in America...

I am doing the classics thing as well. I found a list of the 100 greatest works of all time, and I am currently about 1/4 of the way done. Also, Zeitoun is a great read. I would consider using it in my classroom for a work outside of the traditional cannon, as it covers several social issues.

I am currently reading...

-Moby Dick
-Great Expectations
-The Street Lawyer by John Grisham( I recently decided to read his old works that I hadn't previously read)

Her vamps don't sparkle, but they kill and have feelings; except for Mekare... she just kills.

I did read a number of her books (from Interview through Memnoch) over the course of a few years. Kinda "meh" to me. Started out pretty good, but seemed to devolve into Lestat's eternal desire to find out all the secrets of the universe to see if he had a purpose in life. I like my vampires to be killing machines...not angsty philosophers.

About a CBS Reporter who spent, Forty-five days trapped in a room with three men, held by an unseen militia, interrogated in a language not his own, forced to practice a religion not his own, believing each new morning brought the potential of death.

This is a great book has kept me on the edge of my seat the whole way.....A must read!!!!!!!!!!!

Just finishing "Mornings on Horseback" by David McCullough, about to start "D-Day--The Battle for Normandy" by Antony Beevor. Heard very good things about it.
