As an urban fantasy fan, I recently finished the latest from Jim Butcher's Dresden Files, called "Changes" and not long ago completed the latest in the Repairman Jack series, "Ground Zero". I also recently finished the latest Sookie Stackhouse novel by Charlaine Harris, "Dead in the Family" (the novels the HBO series "True Blood" is based on).

Now I'm mixing in a couple new authors (series) and just completed a novel called "Nightlife" by Rob Thurman, also in the urban fantasy genre, and waiting for Kim Harris to come out with a new book in the Rachel Morgan series.

At the same time, I'm a fan of cozy mysteries and have been working my way through Carolyn G. Hart's "Death on Demand" series of whodunits, the most recent being, "The Christy Caper."

Finally, I decided it was long past time for me to do a complete read of the greatest classics mystery writer of all time, Agatha Christie. So, I've begun slowly working my way through her most popular series, beginning with Miss Marple. Right now, I'm reading "At Bertram's Hotel." I've already finished "The Moving Finger", "The Body in the Library" and "Death at the Vicarage".

In case you think that's a lot, I usually have two or three books going at the same time. I tend to mix the genres so it makes it easier to go back and forth.

One of the great things about being retired is it allows you to do all the recreational reading you could not do when full time work was on the docket.

So, what's got you turning the page?

Finally finishing "Kitchen Confidential" -- I started it about 4 months ago but put it down about halfway through and didn't pick it up again 'til yesterday. I like the book, just forgot about it and didn't carve out the time.

For Father's Day, I got a book called "Sh*t My Dad Says" by Justin Halpern. It is hilarious. You can look up some of the stuff on his blog.

Bourdain just published a new book a few week ago. I wasn't a huge fan of "Kitchen Confidential" but I like his style enough to consider "Medium Raw"

Funny someone is reading Bourdain's Kitchen Confidential. I am tearing through his new one (kind of new) Medium Raw.

Not a bad read, reads really quick for me, great conversational style.

I'm reading a book (actually a compilation of sorts) by Dickens - Little Dorrit
I'm starting to think that Dickens had alot of fun making up some of the names he uses; Tattycoram? lol

Also, a friend of mine turned me on to Anthony Trollope, so I'm also reading "The Way We Live Now". One of the main characters, Augustus Melmotte, is eerily similar to alot of politicians/persons of interest in todays world.
(there's a similar character in Little Dorrit - Mr. Merdle)

There's something to be said about the way books were written 100-150+ years ago. The use of words is vastly different than today's contemporary writers.

This is why I finally picked up KC and decided to finish it. Definitely want to move on to his next one.

Do any of you guys have the Kindle or any ereader? I use the kindle app on my ipod touch which is good but also very small. Though I'm about to go out to sea so I definitely need it even if it is small. I'm wondering if the kindle is worth it and can you add books you may have "downloaded" online for free?

BTW I'm reading the Sookie Stackhouse novels also.

I sporadically pick up books.

Recently went through the complete Sherlock Holmes collection. Now, occasionally picking up Brian Lumley's Necroscope (vampires that don't fucking sparkle) books again.

I did the complete Holmes collection some years ago. A great read, and highly recommended to anyone who enjoys both good mysteries and great characters.

I read Lumley's series (or whatever he had to that point) a long time ago. Not an easy ready but much better than the sparkle stuff. I like my vamps somewhere between deceitful and vicious (the Southern Vampire series) to outright murderous killing machines (Midnight Mass).

I'm reading three different books:
Illiad- This one has taken me some time. I decided to read through all the classics that I never read in High School and College. I most of the way through this one, and enjoy it, it's just very hard to get myself to pick it up most days...
Zeitoun by Dave Eggers- I'm about 100 pages in, and so far it's a really good narrative about Hurricane Katrina...
The Omnivore's Dilemma by Michael Pollan- Interesting look at food in America...

Ever check out Anne Rice?

Her vamps don't sparkle, but they kill and have feelings; except for Mekare... she just kills.
