You would do it because you are inferior and are more or less playing for a tie. Like if Algeria was going against Spain, they would probably go either 5-4-1 or 4-5-1 putting the extra forward in the defense or midfield. But the scenario wouldnt really be appropriate for the USA here. As S&L mentioned, we arent struggling early because we dont have enough defenders, we just have shitty and lazy defenders.

Now, if this is a very open game, like I expect it will, Bradley might add a midfielder (imo, having a 5th Mid is better for controlling the game and slowing it down, as opposed to a 5th defender which can become confusing and people stop working as they have the extra guy to cover for them). But I dont think he would do that unless we are up 2 goals with say 30 minutes to go.
Thanks for the explanation Laley, that makes a lot of sense. Hopefully this won't even be an issue, and we jump on these guys early!

So Serbia is gonna take down their group? I wouldnt be shocked to be honest. I have them in the Semis...

Or do you think England is gonna wake up and score a shit ton of goals and we will get second? Or Slovenia is gonna get first?

I just hope the US beats the shit out of Algeria. 4-0 or something ridiculous. I'm itching for a "Confed Cup vs. Egypt" type of performance.

This too. We have a chance to do something special this year, I just hope our team doesn't F it up before it even really starts.

I'm going to be arrested if we win the group.

I'm also going to be arrested if we fail to advance.

Yeah thats true but I meant in the US's case to where they are a better team you normally wouldnt see it happen.

And Laley nice explanation I figured you'd have a great one haha.

DITTO.

If we win the group....oh man I get a boner thinking of the possible draw we have to the Semis. Seriously, a Viagra type development in my pants.

Yeah ... winning the group nets us probably Ghana/Serbia in round of 16, Uruguay in quarterfinals, Brazil/Netherlands in semis. Nothing un-doable before the semis.

where's everybody getting uruguay from? don't we play group d in the knockout stage? which would mean germany at some point in time. we wouldn't see uruguay until the semis (and that's providing they get past argentina) or am i way off base on this?

If we win the group we would play the second place team in Group D (likely be Serbia or Ghana). A win against that team would result in a match against the winner of the A1/B2 game (Uruguay vs. South Korea).

In the second round, here are the matchups:

(1) A1/B2
(2) C1/D2

(3) E1/F2
(4) G1/H2

(5) B1/A2
(6) D1/C2

(7)F1/E2
(8)H1/G2

The winner of (1) plays the winner of (2), the winner of (3) plays the winner of (4), etc.
Then 1/2 plays 3/4, and 5/6 plays 7/8.
This gives you the two teams for the finals.

thanks for clearing that up for me...looks like they want to avoid the same matchups over and over again

Fuck being an adult. If I wasn't completely broke I would call off work tomorrow and watch live. But as it is... it's gonna be DVR and hope like hell I can avoid spoilers for 6 hours until I get home to watch.

Gomez, NOT Buddle, gets the start up top. Wonder what Buddle did between the Australia game and the WC to piss off Bradley.

No Onyewu. Surprising to say the least. Dude has been inconsistent, but come on. He's still a good player when he's on. If this blows up in the team's face I hope they can Bradley the first chance they get.

Onyewu not starting doesnt suprise me to much hes been inconsistent but still should have started. I really want to know what Buddle did tho I figured he was a lock to start this game. I won't be to happy if this blows up in Bradley's face.

My boss is letting us watch the 2nd half at a bar and grill across the street, but I have to watch the 1st half on my computer. Can someone direct me to a good link where I can catch the game online? Thanks!

Best bets are http://www.atdhe.net or http://www.channelsurfing.net, unless you can access espn3.com.
