There is no reason why someone that is really looking can't find a job.

Grocery Stores,Gas Stations,Fast Food places are all hiring. There is no excuse for people to be un-employed for 26 weeks unless they think they are above working in those places

Your reaction is just as unsurprising....you realize that Obama's own top economic advisors said that the rising unemploment rate just a few months ago was a good sign because more Americans were now looking to enter the job market again, now that the the rate is going down due to the opposite, is that also good news?

FYI here's a WaPo article with Romer's interview.....if I can find the video I'll post it. I remember this very distinctly watching it with my wife and nearly fell of the couch. For the millions of Americans that have been out of work for weeks if not months, I'm not sure adding hundreds of thousands of more job competitors is a "great thing."

Best part is the banks won't even have to loan any of the money out. They can keep the balance sheet looking nice and fat to ensure a nice hefty bonus next year all the while never having to dream of writing down any of the worthless junk they are carrying on the balance sheet at full value (Helocs and 2nd mortgages come to mind on underwater homes) thanks to the beauty of mark to myth accounting. Finally if you happen to be lucky enough to be at a TBTF firm your prop trading desk will have yet another perfect trading quarter because the market is rigged.

Jobless recoveries had been all the rage the past 10-15 years. I will say though it is refreshing to see people finally coming around and realizing that we can't have such an oversized portion of our economy based on a sector that creates nothing of real societal value, but instead just pushes and rearranges paper to make money essentially out of thing air. When you get past all the high falten jargon at its core thats really all it is.

It's like the old saying your parents tell you when you're a kid, if it sounds too good to be true it probably is. Well, whoever decided we could sustain an entire economy without making or manufacturing tangible goods was severely misguided. It looks even worse now that the rest of the world knows our financial services industry deliberately littered the world with worthless paper to make a quick buck (yes we're looking at you Lloyd).

America is in a bad way right now, and I just pray that we try and right the course before it becomes too hopeless of a cause. Sadly that day is coming sooner than later it seems.
