Good point....I heard on the radio after the last guy through a perfect game, that it was the first time since 1880 that 2 perfect games had been thrown in the same season. So I am guessing that 3 times has never happened.

nope, never. and even the one from 1880 isnt really considered since it is not part of the modern baseball era.

maybe he a got a call from Bud Selig before the 9th inning and the word on the street is there have been too many perfect games... let's see if we can start a conspiracy theory here haha.

Aside from the fact it really wasn't even that close a play, you think as an umpire you would want to error on the side of calling the runner out considering it was the last play of a potential perfect game, of which there are like 20 in all of baseball history. With something so rare in the balance it is incomprehensible to me how you call the runner safe in that situation unless it is clear as day, which it was anything but.

He wont be fired. They will remove him from the crew for tomorrow nights game but this wont cost him his job.

If you get a chance watch / listen to the Leyland interview after the game. Class act and he defended the umpire saying everyone makes mistakes, etc. I'm in shock like everyone else but when you look at it like the way Leyland does, you realize it's baseball and thats one of the things so great about it. You never know what you'll see, etc.

Agreed, what can you do? I'd be a bit more upset as a coach if it happened in a playoff series as opposed to an early June game. In a weird way Galarraga may become more famous as a result of this. Mike Witt pitched a perfect game and I wonder what percentage of baseball fans even know who he is. Galarraga is going to be like Harvey Haddix.

Worst call in almost 25 years (1985). I agree with everyone that said this is a call that a professional umpire has to get correct. The play was just not that close. I give props to Leyland for saying the 'right' things in the post game interview....but I don't think that was what he was saying on the field.

I just watched the replay. I don't like the Tigers or anything like that, but as a baseball fan it almost made me sick to my stomach at how badly he blew that call. My God.

that was my thought too when i saw it was going to be close. i thought no way would they call him safe.

yeah that would make sense. there is no way they can fire him. you cant treat him different just because there was a perfect game on the line.

He definitely has to be removed for tomorrow's game and really...he shouldn't do another game in Detroit this year.....personal safety issue.

I know who Mike Witt is and like Len Barker....I know he threw a perfect game.

Agree with iggy....umps never call it that way....almost as if he wanted it to be about him....well, now it is

NO doubt a bad call. The ump is only human. ALL of the Tigers and the Manager were very classy. Maybe this will spark the Tigers for the rest of the season.....BTW The ump is one of my friends` uncle here in Toledo. He is not answering his phone.....lol

I realize he is only human, but come on, I've never seen a call blown that bad.

After watching 2 decades of baseball and seeing how umpires call plays....I just can't believe he called that. Kinda like the area play at 2nd on a DP and the ump calls the runner at 2nd safe even though the SS clearly tagged the bag wtih ball in glove.......I've never seen that called before.....same type of play IMO. Just amateur IMO....like in little league you see an ump on an appeal play call a runner out for tagging up and leaving too early even though the ump didn't see the play in question......same level.

Not that it makes it better, but Joyce has already made a comment and acknowledged his monumental fuck-up.
He could have been a dick about it like some umps would (Joe West would have his publicist issue a statement the next day that was vague and never accepted any blame), but he manned up the minute he saw the replay.
"I just cost that kid a perfect game. I thought he beat the throw. I was convinced he beat the throw, until I saw the replay."

Yeah, but I think there is a difference between Witt and Barker. Barker's perfect game was the first in over a decade, and was a HUGH deal even though he never developed into dependable quality starter. Witt's was during the last game of the year against a craptacular Rangers team, in the height of the Rangers' craptitude. In the modern era I'm guessing more fans would recall Barker's PG, but wouldn't have the foggiest idea who Witt is.

^^^^^that is one thing he is right about.....I can atleast respect him for admitting his mistake........had he not......ooh it owuld be even uglier......but he'll be booed in Detroit for years to come.

Timmy K says that umpires get that call right 100,000 out of 100,001 times and that he clearly blew it tonight. As he said, Jim Joyce, and Jim Joyce alone deprived him of the perfect game he threw tonight because he did retire 27 out of 27 he just didn't get credit for it.
