Once again, comparing a MAC to an average PC is unfair. Let's pump $500 more worth of hardware into the average PC(to make it equal the cost of the cheapest MAC) and a MAC would be absolutely lawl'd at.

Dell has really, really gone downhill. Their customer service is beyond abysmal, so consider yourself royally screwed if you ever are in needs of repairs/warranty service. Now realize their quality has also gotten considerably worse and put two & two together.

Lenovo, Toshiba, Sony and even HP now all make better machines comparatively priced. ASUS has also gotten strong reviews. If you buy a Dell, you simply are overpaying. You've been warned.

As for PC vs. Mac, it's pretty simple: If you are familiar with Windows and relatively computer savvy, the PC is a better value. If not, or you prefer being stylish and trendy, go with Mac.

Anyway, with Google & Verizon firmly behind Android I say this argument is moot in 10 years.

The bottom line is, I'm going to buy a MAC. Not because I think its a superior product, but because this chick I'm trying to bang is OBSESSED with Apple, and if I buy it she's going to want to have my babies(at least in theory).

I guess the real question is, do I go with the plain ole MACBOOK, or do I upgrade to the MACBOOK PRO? Whichever makes your penis seem bigger is the one I probably want to go with.

Thoughts?

Ummm, that's why I said 10 years. Google and Verizon are by far the most vertically integrated players in tech/telecom. Many, many people are going to eventually demand Android-based computers simply out of convenience and function given how many other VZW/Google products they will be using. Barring a major setback I don't think either VZW or Google are known for, I think it's inevitable.

Jobs is hoping Android ends-up going the way of Linux, but Android has already surpassed the installed base of IPhones in the US, and I'm sure while Jobs won't admit it, the IPhone launch on VZW can't come soon enough. But Android is not the IPhone killer, it's the Blackberry killer (not quite there yet, though). Tablet "PCs" are eventually going to put a serious dent in laptop/PC's, as well, and Android will be a dominant player there in addition to eventually having the largest installed base for consumer/business cells as well.

Google is in pre-launch stages of major rollouts of likely free, at least initially, SMS/MMS and VoIP. Do you have any idea what that will do for sales of Android-based cells? When VZW's FIOS finally comes to your area and you eagerly sign-up for the service, any guess what operating system will be running all the integrated goodies?

Umm, no. iPad's are worthless and once people realize they are just an overpriced e-reader they'll run back to laptops.

They are now, but first they'll knock off the netbook and then they'll start knocking off laptops. It won't be long and the tablets will be plenty powerful and functional enough for almost anyone not doing serious work from home computers. Within 5 years, probably sooner, you'll just speak commands rather than type - I'm already "speaking" texts and google searches in my phone some, minor issues with accuracy but mostly just a question of speed before I do it routinely. ..take away the keyboard and what do you basically have?

Do you realize the end game - I don't know, maybe 20 years - is probably your cell phone as your central computer/tech/entertainment center? Everything else will just be "dumb" speakers, monitors, keyboards and other devices that connect to your phone wirelessly?

I used to think the Playstation or XBox would be the centerpiece of home entertainment, but it seems far more likely that smart phones will become much more powerful than laptops or the PS3 becoming smaller/more portable and sprouting real phone services. The limiting tech right now is actually the battery (for cells as well as laptops), but at home it can be plugged in so power is much less of an issue. My smartphone is probably more powerful than the laptop I had 8 years ago, and in 10 years they'll be more powerful than this laptop I'm using. Unless I'm editing movies, high-end gaming or cranking powerful spreadsheets, what need would I really have for a laptop at home?

Google isn't taking Android to the desktop.

It is making Chrome OS for netbooks/tablets/whatever.

But the problem with that is the OS is basically a web browser which means it can have a lack of flexibility when it comes to what the apps/programs can do.

Something like Apple's Iphone OS (a very stripped down mobile version of OS X) or Microsoft's replacement for Windows CE (I forget what it's called it was announced this week and is their new embeddable OS) is probably a more accurate vision of the future of netbooks and tablets. Can't count out a version of WebOS from Palm either.

Android is going to takeover no market except maybe the smartphone market. And I don't see it gaining a massive market share there either or at least not for long. Apple, Nokia, Microsoft, and RIM aren't just going to sit around and let Google take the marketplace. I envision that the smartphone market will be more evenly matched than many tech sectors for a while simply because there are such unique options available that offer different things and excel at different tasks.

That's one of my concerns as well, are Mac's associated with homosexuality?

Might be worth another poll.
