Local police shouldn't even worr about minor traffic violations, but it is their cash cow.

I have absolutely no respect for small town cops. I bunch of overpaid and overweight pricks there simply to give the locals tickets so they can pay the bills. I have a great amount of respect for city police, as they don't normally deal with traffic bullshit because they have real crime, but the douchebags wearing the uniform in small towns are typically a bunch of hacks.

There should almost be two separate categories, the police that operate in the dangerous cities putting their lives on the line, and the fuckers behind the radar guns enjoying their sinecures.
Winner.

I have lived in a small town my entire life. The vast majority of speed traps are in the areas where the main route through towns drops from a 55 to a 45. It's bullshit that I drive into town at 3:00am all of the time and see 2+ pigs sitting there waiting for some guy to go 55 through there. Fuck them all.

At the end of the day there is simply no way to measure if someone is driving in an unsafe manner. Speed is one of many variables that determine how dangerously someone is driving. What about the weather? Psychological factors (such as the drivers mood--of he/she is angry they will be more reckless)? Distractions in the car (other people being noisy/bothersome/sucking their dick ;) )? What about the road construction and management (if the lanes are 30ft wide or dilapidated country roads with 10-foot ditches a foot off the shoulder?)?

Gotta admit this is true around here. Can't believe how many fat ass cops are around Champaign County.

They gotta make money somehow. Attending to actual crimes takes effort (and I give all the credit in the world to the police officers who do that). Speeding tickets and underage drinking violations are quick, easy, and effective moneymakers so that's what many officers work on, and those officers are do not get the privilege of being called police officers....those are pigs.

i dont get what you are trying to say. all of those things are considered when writing someone a ticket, but all somewhat related to speed. that is why the speed limit changes on certain roads. there are more distractions on busy inner city roads, so the speed is lowered. same with construction zones, generally there are either people working or the roads/lanes may be narrow, so the speed is lowered. if it is storming out, you shouldnt be driving like you would on a clear, dry day. plus the cop also takes into account how the stop goes. if there are "psychological factors" or "distractions, he/she will more than likely get a ticket.

and its not bullshit that the cops sit where they do to catch you, its just them paying attention to the way people drive in their town and knowing that A.) drivers dont care to slow down or B.) dont pay attention.

That's the best you can do? Small towns all across the country have unusually low speed limits simply to write tickets.

And what I was saying is that excessive speed alone is not often the case in accidents. 75% of accidents happen below 30mph, and 6% of accidents are a direct result of speeding. There is no correlation between someone's speed alone and their risk to get into an accident. Obviously, don't speed through a storm, or in a construction/school zone, or down some narrow inner city road. That would be dumb. I'm not against giving some idiot that cruises through a school zone at 35 in a 20. I'm simply saying you can speed safely. Control the distance between you and the car in front of you and your safety is fine.

It's to the point that speeders don't worry me as much a person talking on a cellphone while driving. I got behind a woman in a minivan yesterday that was unbelievable.

Have you seen the people in this country? That would be great in a perfect world...but this country is FAR from perfect, so that would never work.

define unusually slow speed. i dont think 55 dropping to a 45 as it enters a more populated area is unusual. it makes sense atleast i think.

haha now thats funny. if you leave any more than 3 car lengths of space between you and the car infront of you on the highway you will be cutoff. sure you can speed safely, that is why highways outside the city are 65/70 and country roads are 55.

also, just because you may feel safe driving at 80mph, doesnt mean the person next to you on the road does. the point is to get everyone driving together at a relative safe speed.

Oregon, Ohio has miles and miles of land out in the middle of the country that, if it were a township, would be at 55mph. But noooooo, because the road has been incorporated it's 35mph. So yes, a slide from 55mph, in which one can easily go 60 without fearing for a cop, to a 35mph is fucking ridiculous.

A guy driving 55 in a 55 and having fifteen feet between the car in front of him is far more dangerous than the guy going 70 in a 55 that has fifty feet in front of him. Besides, when you're going 70 in a 55 there wouldn't be anyone in front of you anyway.

huh? that theory is flawed. if you were going 70 in a 55, you would have a lot of people infront of you because you would be constantly catching up to everyone else going 55.

and i agree with you about the guy going 55 in a 55 only leaving a 15ft gap isnt very safe. but that has nothing to do with speeding, that is just bad driving. but going 70 in a 55 isnt exactly safe either depending on the type of road. 70 on a country road isnt always safe because of hills, curves, side roads, and driveways.

I am glad the speed limits in my small town are only 25 and they are enforced. We have a lot of children in the area and it is just safer.

that may be the point, but it hasent proven to be effective at all. its a pretty shitty point and even shittier idea.

here is a good study on speed limits. its sorta long, so i just posted some of the conclusion. from my understanding, people will drive what they think they could get away with no matter if the speed limit is raised or lowered. and the reasoning that accidents increase at lower speeds is because less people comply with the change. when the speed limit is raised, most people comply with the change and there are a decrease in accidents.
http://www.ibiblio.org/rdu/sl-irrel.html
The primary conclusion of this research is that the majority of motorist on the nonlimited access rural and urban highways examined in this study did not decrease or increase their speed as a result of either lowering or raising the posted speed limit by 4, 10, or 15 mi/h (8, 16, or 24 km/h). In other words, this nationwide study confirms the results of numerous other observational studies which found that the majority or motorist do not alter their speed to conform to speed limits they perceive as unreasonable for prevailing conditions.

The data clearly show that lowering posted speed limits did not reduce vehicle speeds or accidents. Also, lowering speed limits well below the 86th percentile speed did not increase speeds and accidents. Conversely, raising the posted speed limits did not increase speeds and accidents. The majority of motorist did not drive 5 to 10 mi/h (8 to 16 km/h) above the posted speed limit when speed limits were raised, nor did they reduce their speed by 5 or 10 mi/h (8 to 16 km/h) when speed limits were lowered.

Because there were few changes in the speed distribution, it is not surprising that the overall effects of speed limit changes on accidents were minor. It is interesting to note that compliance decreased when speed limits were lowered and accidents tended to increase. Conversely, when compliance improved after speed limits are raised, accidents tended to decrease.

See but that's not speeding per se, it's speeding with hills and curves. Of course that's dumb.

I grew up in NW Ohio. There is literally nothing around. Every couple of miles there is a town of ~2,000 people, but that's about it. You could cruise 100mph down plenty of those flat, straight, and wide roads and be perfectly fine. There is little to no traffic ever.

Of course I wouldn't speed faster than what everyone else is on an expressway (although in 80/90 there isn't ever much traffic out here), as that is dangerous and dumb. Of course though that takes into account traffic, and thus speeding isn't the issue...it's speeding and traffic. But everyone speeds on expressways, you're just as dangerous driving under the speed limit during rush hour as you are going 90 and weaving in and out of traffic.
