That would work...except that they never actually pulled the prank. The cops got there before the kids could actually pull off the prank.

Basically, I think the punishment should fit the crime. And a senior prank doesn't warrant felony charges. Misdemeanor...MAYBE. School discipline...ABSOLUTELY!

To me, it sounds that if the students are charged, it could ruin the school as well.

Privately, Lockland school officials confirm that the controversy and negative national publicity couldn’t have come at a worse time. The tiny, cash-strapped district is about to send out hundreds of post cards to families who live outside the district trying to convince them to enroll.

Lockland has been an open enrollment district since 2003. Nearly one in five of its 685 students lives outside the district and brings in state funding.

Also, Lockland’s school board is considering putting an operating levy on the November ballot.

They'll probably be - and should be - indicted - that doesn't take much, and should sufficiently scare the hell out of them. I would think the charges will [rightfully] be knocked down from felonies in court - a lot depends upon what the local cops defined as "resisting arrest".

Half their students go to vocational school? Wow.

The only part that chaps me are the parents that think their little darlings shouldn't be prosecuted because they're "college-bound and athletes". Does this mean that some kid who isn't a jock and plans on joining the military after graduation is fair game?

That's what a few people were saying is the reasoning for charging these kids with a felony. Listening to the radio today, a lot of people feel that the city wanted the felony charge so that the county picked up the bill for the 18 hours they spent in jail in addition to paying for the cost of the trial. If they were charged with a misdemeanor...it would have been a burden on the cash-strapped town. I'm not saying that is the reason for the felony charge...but a lot of people around the city believe it is.

A few, ahem, other guys broke in to our school my senior year and crisco'ed all the door handles, lockers and some walls and floors. All members got off scotch free, and it's not like who did it was a mystery.

That's the thing. They weren't trying to do something that would be hard to fix. Just trying to do something so the administration could say "damn it, you kids got us!".

They weren't trying to steal anything and they weren't trying to break/ruin/graffiti anything. Give them some community service since they got caught and go on your way.

Fucking people.

So, a crime is okay as long as it's for fun? So, would breaking and entering your house, and assembling your living room on your back patio be okay then?

Maybe if we actually cracked down on the problem they wouldn't think this was a fun thing to do?....

It's a fugging senior prank.

There isn't a problem.

It becomes a problem if they do it to someones house or anytime that isn't their senior year. Or if they do it multiple times. It's a senior prank.

If you think prosecuting 20% of a graduating class including the valedictorian is a good idea then you're an idiot. Hands down, no questions asked. It benefits no one to prosecute them. Costs the state, county, school, kids, and parents a hell of a lot more time, money, and grief to prosecute them. Especially when you consider the difficulties these kids will then have getting into schools or finding jobs.

Give them community service and maybe probation. It benefits the community by picking up litter or helping at a park or whatever and the probation tells them that you're serious about them not doing something similar again.

This isn't brain surgery guys.

Ths one involved breaking and entering. That's where the line was crossed.

Why don't we just make B&E and resisting arrest legal for everyone as long as 'it was just in fun'?!?! Really!?!? It's ok as long as the crime was just a prank?

Maybe they should have broke into the local grocery store and moved all of the chips to the canned food isle. Maybe they should have broke into the Lowes and moved all the hammers to the kitchen sink display. Maybe they should have broke into city hall and moved all of the tax forms to the 'to be shredded bin'. Maybe they should have broke into the gas station and switched the decaf and regular coffee. Maybe they should have broke into the police station and moved all the prisoners from wing A to wing B. As long as it was just a fun prank, right?

18 = adult
B&E = crime
resisting arrest = crime

adult + crime + crime = punishment and criminal record

Maybe they should have spent more time doing the math instead of the prank! They deserve whatever they get even if it is jail time. Don't do the crime if you can't do the time!

They likely just used an open door. I know my high school has entries that are always open.

my my how times have changed. My future FIL was just telling us the story (again) the other day about how he dropped a cop with a right hook in 1972 and had the charges dropped because he apologized (he still got charged with 12 equipment violations on his 69 Camaro SS and giving alcohol to a minor). I think if these kids have clean records some community service and some school punishment (not allowed to walk) should be sufficient.
