Sounds like a done deal, he'll be playing in New York:

My favorite player of all time, I will be getting a NYRB jersey if this is true. And, I think as a soccer move, this may be better than the Beckham deal for LA. Henry is 32, has played less than often in the past couple seasons with Barcelona, but still has a strong desire to play, and can still play at a really high level. Not to mention he's a pure, world-class goal scorer, something the MLS has been lacking since its inception.

How common will this be with big names as they get older? Come here because they can still be one of the top players and make the top dollars in their later years.

I guess the reputation of the MLS will become the stomping grounds for washed up stars who are no longer good enough to earn playing time for good club teams in Europe (already Beckham, now Henry).


Don't get me wrong, Henry's still pretty good, but no longer good enough to deserve to play along Messi and Ibrahimovic.

He's been "ehh" for AC Milan, at best.

His best days are clearly behind him, and that's the point I'm trying to make.

You're never going to see a bonafide superstar in the prime of his career come play in the MLS, just the same as why some of the best players in the country play overseas.

It's true, we'll never see a Lionel Messi circa 2010 playing in MLS. That said, Henry immediately becomes the best striker in the league. I can't wait to see him play.

Go Rocks, I'm very excited to see him play as well.

It's not really an insult to the MLS, but why would a player in his prime not play in the best leagues, unless they're not good enough anymore.

No different than bench player Josh Childress going to Greece where he gets stardom and playing time.

I dunno. Henry still has the pace and skill to be very good. I have NO CLUE what was up his ass all year. He just fiddled around the box trying to be perfect and wasnt scoring. Pedro and Bojan are the CLEAR 2 and 3 options after Messi (unless you count Iniesta as a winger). Henry could still play at a VERY high level in Europe. At Barcelona he just never fit in. But shit, he is still better for them than Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who is considered a top 10 striker in the world.
Becks, while on the decline the last 5 years, was still on of the best in MLS. Henry will be THE BEST. Becks was also a huge part for Milan. He didnt have the pace from his younger days, but to say he didnt have an impact for them would be wrong. He wouldve been playing for England this summer without the injury (Henry will likely make the France squad).


side note: Dont be at all surprised to see Raul (Spain/Real Madrid) join Henry this summer. Im pretty sure he is almost as done of a deal as Henry is.

yeah, Ibra blows. Probably my least favorite player in the world considering what Barca gave up for him and how shit he was. It doesnt matter though, I think/hope/pray he will be gone next year. Juve could use him again!

As a Juve fan, I would love Ibra back in Turin. I think his downfall was getting away from Italian football.

I wouldn't say the MLS is a place for "washed up" stars. More like for when they are the downside of their career. As already stated....Henry will be one of the top strikers in the league once he makes the move. Hell Barros Schelotto won the MVP!

I'd say it's probably the equivalent to a Tim Duncan going to Europe...he's not washed up, just on the downside of his career. It'd still be huge news for European basketball.

Agreed completely. I was completed STUNNED at how how poorly he fit in with Barca and the way they move the ball and style of attack. I mean, its obvious it was WAY different from his time in Turin and Milan. But when he was with Ajax he was one of the best in the world and its where he made his first big splash in Europe. Ajax and Barca are like the kings of Total Football, and youd think he could remember how it works from his younger years. I guess it had just been too many years....

He had his doubters going in, but I thought he could adjust (since Ajax started total football with Johan Cruyff who brought it to Barca later) but it didnt happen. The doubters were proved wrong, and I am left hating him. I long for Sammie Eto'o and the 50 Million Euros we gave up for Zlatan. Damn Inter got a fucking STEAL in that deal, and then to put salt in the wound beat Barca in the CL. FUCK! I need to go for a run, that got me riled up lol.

I only saw one this past year, I try and watch Premier League if I get a chance because I'm a Liverpool fan. Again, I wasn't very impressed. Ibrahimovic hasn't fit in as much as his money would say, but that doesn't mean he still isn't ahead of Henry in playing time simply because he's more talented at this point in Henry's career. I agree Pedro and Krkic are ahead of Ibrahimovic as options, but I think all 3 are still ahead of Henry.

And injuries are a part of soccer. You can say that Becks might have been better if he didn't get injured, but maybe he got injured because of how broken down he is.


Listen, I'm not trying to say that these guys aren't still talented (Becks and Henry), but the fact of the matter is if a chance for equal playing time was available somewhere else in a premier league in Europe, they absolutely would not be in the MLS.

You DONT see Tim Duncan playing overseas because the best competition in the world is still in America, and likewise the best soccer talent is in Europe.


Also, one of the only reasons Beckham even went on loan to AC Milan is because his spot on the English team was in doubt if he kept playing against the level of the competition that the MLS provided, Capello wanted him playing against better competition.

The only part I disagree with is that. I think they would be able to get even playing time in several big leagues and would arguably be a top player on those respective teams. Problem is those guys dont wanna go play where they cant win championships. Henry isnt gonna go play for Portsmouth even though he could. It is a bad team and they wont play for a bad team in Europe when they can play for a bad team in America where they get more press, and more money and will play for championships (although, frankly they are joke championships lol).

Okay, I meant a good team lol.

No player in any sport WANTS to go to a team that has no shot of winning a championship, even if they're clearly the best player.

If New York gets Henry and Raul, championship is theirs to lose.
