The city is a joke and now they may give a couple hundred thousand dollars to a group that wants 4 or 5 million dollars to renovate a old run down theater that has been closed since the 70's but they can't find the money to keep the police and fire departments staffed so they can protect the city.

Don't forget the new city building... The old one must not have had an adequate wi-fi signal for all those new computers they bought...

Lol
I hope it works out better than the county jail they built downtown.I am still waiting to see the new city manager riding her bicycle around downtown. She stated when they hired her that she would often be seen riding all around downtown getting to know the people.I bet she will be carrying one of those glocks and wearing a bulletproof vest.

Why does everyone cling to this notion that downtown is unsafe?? I feel safer down there than many other parts of the community.

Whats that supposed to mean? Its not an anti-steubenville thread at all. I work here and wondered what was on the minds of other folks who either live or work here. Its a shame that "money" is such an issue in this town, because there are so many instances where the money could be used for the right reasons, but isn't. This isn't a bash thread.

MoW,

I agree about the downtown. I would have no problem walking anywhere downtown with money hanging out of my pockets. Now the hilltops... thats a little different.

You are one of the few that feel safe. The herald star has numerous letters to the editor about the crime in steubenville from the people that live their. Here is just one from sundays paper. There are more than this one in the paper.

"City crime getting out of hand"

To the editor:

I have a question? Why is it that crime in this town (Steubenville) is getting so bad that you cannot go outside on your porch and enjoy a nice spring day with your children without worrying who and where the next shooting will be.

I don't understand how this is happening, and they get away with it until another crime happens. They can't afford to pay our police officers so they lay them off and the crime keeps happening.

But we have a new city building.

What is wrong with this picture? I thought the police were here to protect and serve. I always loved living here. It is my home. If this is the way we protect our city, I don't want to be in this city anymore.

A lot of families in this area feel the same way I do. We don't want to leave our hometown, but we have to protect our families.

Sorry to resurrect this 5 days later but where in that letter does she state she's afraid of being downtown. More than likely she means on the hilltops which are completely out of control. By and large downtown is not the problem area in town.

PH and Labelle are awful. I grew up on PH in the mid-80's through the mid-90's. It wasn't a good place to be back then and it's a lot worse now. I have friends and family on Labelle and PH and work has required me to frequent both over the years as well. It's extremely disappointing to see how bad it is on both hilltops. I'd say both are much worse than downtown.

The park across from my parents house is full of these punk ass kids who leave their trash all over the fucking place. Half the time it looks like a Tarzan movie across the street. It just makes me sick to my stomach to see how bad both hilltops have gotten.

This letter doesn't state downtown but other ones have stated the crime downtown such as the murder that just took place a couple of weeks ago and the robberies that happen downtown and the assualts that happen daily. You are right about the hilltop being out of control and getting worse.I can remember when i was growing up you could walk anywhere you wanted downtown day or night and not have to worry about anything. We would walk down on 5th and 6th street and never worry about anything.

it seems the people need to take back their streets. you have to keep that stuff out. do what you have to. call the cops every five mintues. I don't think it is smart to take the law into your own hands so just keep dialing 911 every time someone does something illegal and quit looking the other way. If you have to form a neighbor watch. if it comes to it get some of the people on the street deputised and start taking care of business.

the more "advanced" we get the more it seems that we are heading back to the wild west. every one is going to be caring guns and a shooting is going to happen every day.

Anyone know how we can get back to the "50s"?

Be careful with making all those calls though. There's a woman who used to be a poll worker for us who lived on Maryland and she called the cops about 5x a day about all the deals happening in broad daylight.....the cops showed up and threatened to arrest her for harassing *them* with all her calls.
