He was mediocre(meaty oaker) in collage....he moved up the draft charts by shredding a god awful ND defense in a bowl game and by throwing it a long way from his knees. Give me an intelligent qb(Pennington, Warren Moon) over a guy that has the big arm(Jeff George, Russell, Vick)

Sure he was. What separates a good from a great quarterback is one thing: accuracy. This isn't the type of thing where you can blindly look at completion percentage and derive that a passer is accurate either.

Russell was surrounded by absolutely phenomenal offensive talent at LSU, particularly in 2006. So what happened was that the goal of the offense was to run the ball in order to force man coverage, knowing that any of those receivers (Bowe, Doucet, and Davis) would have a pretty good shot against the defensive backs out there. If somehow zone remained, there was always dumping it off to Hester (who would have one LB to beat on the perimeter). What happens in man coverage is that it greatly expands the window that a passer has to put the ball into to maximize the yards gained. For a highly accurate passer like Peyton Manning in college, he could dissect a cover-7 all the live long day. For someone who has the accuracy of a good high school QB like Russell, working to man coverage is vital.

I'm all in favor of meaningful stat analysis as a way of telling the story of what happened, but it's extremely difficult to do this and present it as meaningful as it relates to scouting.

He certainly will be labeled as a "bust," however I do not believe he will be considered as a bigger bust than Leaf. Many thought the Colts were crazy when they drafted Manning over Leaf. And when the Chargers took Leaf, many proclaimed Leaf would have a better career than Manning. How's that working out for San Diego?

No one really said anything about another QB from Russell's class being better than him. And the expectations for Russell really weren't the same level that they were for Manning/Leaf.

Russell was already overweight at 290, so he's sliding in the wrong direction. We'd say his imminent release might motivate the former No. 1 overall pick to get in shape, but history has proven that won't be the case. The "move JaMarcus to right tackle" jokes are coming fast and furious now. If Russell puts on about 20 more lbs., he could play five-technique end in Oakland's new 3-4 sets.

that was my first thought when i read the title.

It really isnt his fault the raiders are awful in drafting. I still vote for ryan leaf...cause if you all remembe the discussion was Leaf or Manning...whom should you pick. I bet a poll at the time woulda been close to 50/50....

One of the things that Leaf & Russell have in common, I believe, is that they had good final years in college. Their body of work didn't indicate that they'd be successful for a long time. You do have your exceptions but I don't trust drafting QB's that were a 1-2 year starter who went off their senior year.

Exactly. I think Tim Couch may have been the same way. I'd rather see a QB who has had a good 3 years starting in a system with some success. There are always exceptions in those cases too (Brady Quinn).

I believe Mark Sanchez was only a one year wonder but I think he'll have time to acclimate in a "game manager" role in NY.

Usually you never really know what you're gonna get with these guys (Akili, Couch, David Carr, etc) because they go to bad teams (highest draft picks), are thrown into the fire and get the bust label. If they go into the right situation (Roethlisberger, Flacco, Sanchez) with a strong running attack & defense, they have a fighting chance.

Sanchez coulda been the exception but he has yet to be a big time QB in the NFL..he is a game manager a this point like Raplisburger.

He was behind other QB's.....and it was USC...so he got alot of pub. I imagine if he was some place else.....NJY wouldnt have taken the change on him like they did.

That Greenie guy on Ike and Ike this morning made one of his only good points regarding sports....a point i make ALL THE TIME.... Talked about how in fooball it is so much more team interdependant than any other. the discussion was about Campbell who now is in Oaktown. and it is a same discussion ive had about a kid in our HS who signed to play QB in college but is also a baseball prospect....

In the other sports you can be on a suckass team yet still show how good you are.........but in football...you can be great but if your team sucks...you cannot really show it...especially on offense.

Talked about how campbell has had soo many differ OC in his career. True.....but there is also a flip side.....if you are truly are a great QB you can excell in a number of schemes...and if you excell then you know the OC is gonna survive for another year. So it is possible combo of not having the same offense...but also if he woulda executed better then the offense woulda been better..and he woulda saved the OC....

He did have a remarkable stat....18 red zone TD passes last year.....0 INT
