Does he go down as the biggest QB bust in the first round? Passing Ryan Leaf?

I always thought he was overrated going into the NFL. So, in my mind, not a bust.

This.

I couldn't believe him going that high in the first place--he was a 4th round pick at best IMO. So not a bust in my mind, just a really dumb pick. Not sure why they thought so highly of him. But certainly a bust regardless of how I feel about it. He did get picked that high, clearly hasn't come close to living up to the hype. But you have to wait until his career is over before you call him Ryan Leaf. He may get another shot somewhere else someday and if he does, we'll see how that goes.

He doesn't care. He got paid. That's all that matters. Piss poor work ethic and doesn't care if he turns into Jabba the Hutt.

I think if he gets cut it will serve as a wake up call and he will take advantage of his new chance.

Have any of you who even have a decent arm (and I mean decent, not like you just think it's decent and you're overrating yourself) tried this? Because from one knee I can throw a football between 40-45 yards. I tried it after all the talk about him getting 60 just to try it. Now I LOL when people say that. It's really not anywhere near as impressive as it was to me before I did it, it's not that hard. I can't throw too much further than that on my feet. It just makes me laugh that so many people talked about that and still do--after a little test, I'd guess that nearly every QB in the NFL could throw 60 yards from one knee.

^Yeah, I can throw a ball almost as far on one knee as I can while standing up.

The whole idea with throwing from one knee was that it was how Kyle Boller showed scouts that he actually could throw a deep ball. That said, it's pointless for anyone who doesn't sidearm or submarine the ball.

As for Russell, I had him pegged as about a 6th-round pick at best. I saw his entire LSU career and never once saw anything that would have convinced me that he would be worth more than that; it's the prototype case of "all the tools and no toolbox".

Same here, he was never impressive at LSU. He was a dumbass when he played there, not sure why they thought he'd grow a brain in the NFL.

I think the Raiders hold on to Russell and give him one more year. Pretty huge bust so far. I think I read somewhere that even after he was throwing from his knees and making Al Davis need a clean pair of boxers, he was still not expected to be a 1st round pick by many teams.

Is it a coincidence that you are talking about balls while being on your knees? I think not.

Really? A 4th rounder? His last year at LSU he had like 3,000+ yards, 28 TD's, and completed almost 70% of his passes. He wasn't a slouch in college.

Yeah but there was no doubt that he just made some DUMB mistakes. There have been a lot of guys look good when surrounded by a bunch of talent in college. He's got the physical tools, but that's it. You can get buy with that in college when you're surrounded by other great players.

Yeah but every player makes dumb ass mistakes in college. Russell surprisingly was a pretty efficient passer back in college. He was also the consensus #1 among QB's that season. He has a big arm, had impressive college game film, impressive stats, played in the SEC, and won games. There was no way he wasn't going to go #1 that year to Oakland, who was in desperate need of a franchise QB.

I hear people all the time say Russell shouldn't have even been a first rounder, let alone #1 overall. That just doesn't make sense to me. There was no way that a team who needed a QB was going to pass a prospect like him up. Yeah, he does suck ass now. But back then, it was a pick that made a lot of sense for Oakland and was supposed to turn the franchise around.

I mean, I have no reference to cite myself but I said back then that I thought it was a mistake. jpake1 did too. I don't know, the numbers were still the same numbers to look at then. Just something about him on the field didn't look like it would translate to the NFL.

Why trade for Jason Campbell if you don't plan to release Russell?

From what I have heard here in the past few hours, they will. But who says they have to? You can always keep him around as back-up and hope that he eventually starts to get "it". Doubtful but you never know haha

Because he costs a lot of money and Campbell has already proven to be a pretty good QB, and he's young just like Russell. So he'd REALLY have to "get it" to surpass where Campbell is now, let alone whatever improvements Campbell makes in the coming years.

Oakland is trying to get Russell to restructure his contract, which everyone predicts he'll opt not to do. If this happens, Russell will be cut in all likelihood. It'll actually save them around $6.5 million to release Russell when it's all said and done.

Seems like the only reason he hasn't been released yet is simply because of Al's pride. He thought Russell would be a great QB and has stood up for Russell numerous times publicly (especially during the Lane Kiffin drama), so it's a tough one for stubborn Al to swallow.
