No it isn't.

And comparing Yuengling to a top craft beer has at least an equal gap in quality.

Not when comparing the beer style. Most craft beers are ales.

Are you claiming that there are not lagers night and day better? You are mistaken, if so.

The Yuengling phenomena is the same thing as Coors was back in 70s before it was sold east of the Mississippi. Then Coors came out as a "national" brand and ruined the aura around their beer by coming out with Coors Light which is like drinking water. Yuengling is smart to limit the distribution, while creating a "can't get it here" attitude around their product. Not the best lager in the world but a pretty damn good one and I buy it whenever I'm somewhere that sells it.

Sure I have had a few lagers better then Yuengling but I like it very much. I have visited many micro brewerys. I always take my own samplers with me. The brewers out in Colorado and Utah always love it when I bring Great Lakes and Yuengling.

It's been awhile since I have had Yuengling on a regular basis. (Honestly I'm not much of a beer drinker these days.) But when I went to college (in upstate NY), I had my fair share and always enjoyed it. Of course it was rare since when you are a student you go with the cheapest swill you can find.

I have always liked Yuengling as a brand and I think that is because when I was young I toured the factory on a family trip to Pennsylvania. I thought it was very cool and even got to drink a beer (non-alcoholic, of course). So I'm sure that influences my opinion of the beer.

What'd you drink in college? Genny Light? Genny Cream Ale? :D

While I can't give a completely fair assessment since I haven't had it, I would agree with qcb. From the little research I've done, Yuengling just doesn't seem all that appealing to me, and while I drink a lot of ales like many craft drinkers, I've found plenty of lagers that I love. In fact it's ironic you mention Great Lakes, I think they are one of my favorite breweries as far as lagers go; Dortmunder Gold, Eliot Ness, The Wright Pils, and their Octoberfest.

All this Yuengling talk is tempting me to make a trip down to Pomeroy (20 miles) and pick some up across the river.

It's been a few months since I bought any.

Yuengling is a pretty good beer. It's not my favorite. I've bought it a few times. NEVER have I been excited to take a road trip to get it. The complete opposite actually; I was pissed that I had to drive almost two hours just to pick up 2-3 cases of the bombers. It wasn't one of those, I want it because I can't have it things. It's just a middle of the road beer for me. Some days I want to drink a 30 of Busch Light. Other days I want to drink a 12 pack of any Sam Adams. When I want something inbetween, Yuengling will hit the spot. Yuengling and I get along well. Some of my best drinking nights came from Yuengling.
