I just don't understand it. My kids are home today and its 63 outside and they want to stay in the house. It's not like they don't have anything to do out there, they have bikes, dirtbikes, a basketball hoop.

I guess this a question that really has no real answer.

There's more entertainment in the house than outside - according to them.

I know when I was young/little, my brothers and I were outside playing all the time. And we stayed out till our Mom called us in.

Now there's video games, computers, over a 100 channels.

*EDIT
But, I grew up on a farm. So between: riding horses, chores, cowboys & indians, bikes, etc., that was our entertainment. We were very limited to the tv, had an Atari, but out time was limited on that too (mostly weekend mornings)
So, I really can't speak for kids who grew/grow up in town.

...Kids today are way to soft and some parents aren't interested enough to make them go outside and play. I know, I know when we were kids all we had was our imagination, our friends, and that occupied most of our days. Today if you tell your kid to go outside rather than;
1.play video
2. text on their phones
3. play on the internet ...they look at you like your're speaking a foreign language.

Kids don't know how to go outside and play anymore. Like someone else said, it's easier to take advantage of all of the entertainment options in the house.

The easy route is the one which kids seem to take anymore if they have a choice.

Growing up we never had:
1. Cable to satellite tv. Had 4-5 channels
2. No cell phones to txt or play on
3. NO video game system.
4. Al Gore hadnt invented the internet yet.
5. No computer. Well....only time we had a computer was over Christmas break when dad would bring one home so we could play Oregon Trail game.

We would be outside aallll the time. Depending on the time of year would depend on what sport we d play. Hell..in the winter I can remember taking salt...annd even a hammer, to break up the ice on the driveway to shoot hoops. Whiffleball/go to court/fishing/harvesting bluegills outta the pond/plyaing in the wood/dirt clock wars/.

Some of the most fun each summer would be constructing a make shift fort at the local Crick (creek). Always had to catch a snake to nail it to the sign. We d spend weeks on it....only to have a huge storm over a few days come thru..have the crick raise and wipe it out!

Of course we all said we were bored as kids. Nature of being a kid...but thank God we didnt have all the garbage today to keep us inside.

I had video games and all that when I was a kid....But on days like today I would be outside from like 10 am..come back for lunch back outside til dinner and then out til i get yelled @ for it being too dark. My younger brothers n sister are the same was as most now....sitting inside texting and watching tv

My kids were (are) good about going outside. We live in front of the high school so there were always kids around our house. They'd rather be outside than inside where someone (me) might do something to embarrass them. :cool: We had a trampoline at one point and there were always kids on it. There has also been much basketball played in our driveway.

Our kids are also smart and figured out that if they don't make themselves busy, we'd do it for them.

I'm not naive enough to think were the things that keep kids in the house today wouldn't have kept me in the house had they been available. I'm also not one to preach about how the young uns just don't get it. I will say this though, kids are missing out on a lot of memories. Some of my fondest memories are of hanging outside as a kid, I can't imagine kids today recalling that epic week spent on the couch at home on the computer, texting friends and playing video games. Too bad they won't have nearly the opportunities we did without all the useless distractions.

They are only useless distractions if parents let them be. I was fortunate as a child to have all the new gaming systems, however, we weren't allowed to just sit around and play them all day.

Be the parent, kick em out or make them clean all of the house.

My kids are limited on the amount of time the wii, computer or TV is on per day.

Hand em the toilet brush and watchem scramble! If that don't work tell em after their done cleaning the can sit facing each other on the floor holding hands! I assure you they will go out!

Its all about how you present the options!

Kids today seem to have some sense of entitlement. If you do ask them to do some yard work or something like that, they want to know how much they are going to get paid to do it.

How about I just pay your cell phone bill, or pay the Internet bill this month? That doesn't seem to cut it with them.

People want to complain about kids today, but it's the damn parents, like the one on this thread, that don't do anything about getting their kids outside. Sorry...they did come on here to post a thread about it. You Fail as a parent. That's what you did. You failed.

Easy fix... Take the cell phones away, take the power cord for the video games, password the computer and tell them is a nice day, find something to do outside or you will find something for them... I bet those bikes get used quickly.

I feel like my age group, I am 20 years old, was the last group of kids to actually play outside. We had tv and video games but we still played outside. Anyone around 5-10 years younger all seem to stay inside. I never see kids playing outside in my neighbor hood or playing in the open grassy fields we used to play in when I'm home.

They're just getting prepared for adulthood. I'd sure the hell like to go out and play (translation: drink beer with cornhole or something involved), but I'm stuck inside the office for a few more hours. So if you stay inside throughout your youth, you'll be in good shape to make the switch to being an office drone.
