I heard it on the fan and then read it on nbcsports.com. It's down to reds or tigers?


Thoughts?
I say go for it. He can still hit, and this team needs to score runs. Defensively Damon is a joke though....

Intellectually this dude is a joke.....You ever hear him speak??? He sounds like the dumbest person ever.

He also said that crazy stuff in defense of A-Rod: Damon: "It's not he broke the law". In fact Steroids are illegal drugs. Damon: "He (A Rod) could have done something worse"....Reporter: "What would be worse, Johnny?" Damon: "Murder". Haha....

If he helps us win though, sign him up.

He wont be a red. His agent is using them as a way to up the $$ from another team.

If he is using the Reds to up other offers, he's stupid. The Reds have $0 to spend at this point now.

Because he's a free agent and if he decides he wants to provide his services to that team, then he'll go for it.

Really, the Reds aren't a bad gig right now. It's a very young team with some very promising players mixed in with some likable vets (Rolen, Arroyo, Harang, Rhodes, Cordero, Hernandez). It's also a hitters park...although not quite as hitter friendly as the new Yankee Stadium....but nonetheless, a good place for an aging vet to go and still be able to put up some decent offensive numbers.

I would like for him to join the Reds but it sounds like Scott Boras is just trying to get more money for his client.

In other news, the Reds signed Miguel Cairo to a minor league deal.

This is all Boras, Fay or anyone else with the reds aren't saying they are interested. Damon would play left not center, so willy t won't be affected. It would mean less dickerson, heisy, francisco. Bad move IMO, they need PT so they are ready in 2011.

This doesn't make sense. Damon isn't old enough, nor would the Reds be giving up any young players to make this move.

i know this is sarcasm, but damon is old and has quite a bit of mileage on him. i dont think walt is dumb enough to do this unless he can get him for 2-3mil, which would be fine.

If you get him you're going to get a guy that can still hit but has the worst arm of any outfielder in MLB right now. You'd be stretching I think at this point to get 145-150 games out of him

If they can get him for less than it would cost to re-sign Gomes, then ok. If not, go get Gomes - he's better anyway.

i doubt they would expect him to even play that many. i do cringe when i watch damon play and a ball is hit to him with someone on third. the reds staff is big on Ks though and left field is pretty short so that would help a little.

if they spend money on an outfielder pretty sure it's gonna be a lefty. of the 8 spots 3 are locked in as a RHB (Rolen, Phillips, Hernandez/Hanigan) and 2 more (Stubbs and Janish) will likely get most of the starts this year. i agree though that i wouldn't pay more than gomes is worth.

Stubbs should be the starting CF from day 1. Bruce will be in right, and then I say you platoon Gomes and Dickerson in left. I take back my earlier statement, the Reds do not need Damon. If the Reds play Taveras in CF and have Stubbs in AAA on opening day, I will have lost all faith in the organization.

The Reds have 4 quality OFs already, and Heisey should be a call up, and Taveras is still goldbricking, so they have a logjam as it is.

Obviously you're not too familiar with the Cincinnati Reds...Assuming Damon signs w/ the Reds and did in fact play 145-150 games, well quite frankly it'd be a miracle.

Gomes isn't better than Damon. Not for what the Reds need. They need someone who can get on base and hit at the top of the lineup.

Jocketty apparently denied any interest in signing Damon according to what I just heard on 97.1 (Columbus), but he did confirm interest in Cabrerra and/or Gomes.

I would like to see the Reds go after both. Even in this economy, if the Reds are contenders, they will sell tickets. Reds fans are very much fairweather fans, so it is kind of a risk/reward that could easily pay off.

Stubbs is a horrible OBP guy. Look at his minor league numbers. He's going to K a lot and not draw a ton of walks. I like Stubbs, but not in the #2 hole yet.

Dickerson, well, if he was a full-time starter, the Reds wouldn't have to talk about the possibility of Damon.

If Jock isn't serious, I guess it's a waste of time to discuss, but Damon is an ideal #2 hitter who has a nice blend of speed and pop. His career OBP is over .360, which would be far and away the best on the Reds, and give them something they haven't had in a long time.

Azu, I'm concerned that Damon is done. Much of his power numbers were inflated by the wind-tunnel effect at Yankee stadium last year. That had to influence his bases on balls, too. I just wonder if he is really a .360 OBP guy anymore or more like .320. NL pitching and a small park could help, but who knows? Especially if he is unhappy about having to take a significantly smaller deal than he wants.

I know I'm making a lot of assumptions just to say that I would rather see Gomes in left and some combination of Stubbs, Tavares, Dickerson, etc. battling it out for center, but I just don't see where Damon really adds enough to the lineup. At this point in his career, he may turn in to Adam Dunn light.

Apparently the Reds are "seriously" considering SS Orlando Cabrera and have contacted Scott Boras about Xavier Nady.
