He is a super talented wrestler who trained his butt off for a 18 months straight and I believe that and the weight cut affected his performance late last year. I like the contrast of styles and think both guys will be up for the match given the history.

this past weekend, Abdi from west won the championship at the Jonathan Alder tournament and Bonner from Bhaven won the Robin Drumm Classic.

Centennial did really good at alder this past weekend too. They had multiple people place within the top four and their 120 pounder took first. Their 132 pounder wrestled Em of west for a second time although he lost the score was very close

It seems that every team has one or two really good kids. However, depth in scorer's is an issue for most. Should be a fun Saturday. Odds favorite teams are probably Mifflin, Whetstone, West and Walnut Ridge. I also have a feeling that Marion Franklin and Centennial are going to perform very very well and might be sleepers for the top spot. Just my two cents.

Yeah I agree with that. Centennial has some tough lower weights. Emmerson, their 120 pounder is known to upset. Last season he was able to beat lehnen of whetstone and Ali from east I expect him to do exceptionally well at cities. Also Marion-franklin has some good higher weight classes, their 195 who I think is Wellborn (correct me if I'm wrong) should be a major factor for their team. It will be a very fun day!

Agree 100%, gonna be an interesting day, and several teams have a shot to win.

Walnut Ridge and Centennial have some depth and will score, but not sure they will have a champion.

Just a guess, but Whetstone (160 & 285), West (106, 132 & 285), Brookhaven (113, 152 & 220) and Marion Franklin (145, 182, 195 & 220) could have multiple champs and will score elsewhere.

Mifflin, for my couple pennies, could have numerous champs (120, 126, 152, 160, 170 & 285) and will score elsewhere. BOLD = ​almost 100% lock!

Quite a few of the City League wrestlers may have a shot outside of the CCL Championship. Where have they wrestled to prepare themselves for after the City tourney.

Allow me to take you Inside Columbus City League Wrestling and break down a few of the top teams and tell you why there’s going to be a shakeup at the top this year. Just based on what I’ve seen the tournament is wide open this year and whichever team show’s up to wrestle will win the title.


I’ll start by breaking down the top three teams from last year. Mifflin had 10 placers in which 3 where Seniors that scored 67 of the teams 192.5 points two of which won titles. They have one returning champ two runner-ups two 4[SUP]th[/SUP] and two 5[SUP]th[/SUP] place finisher. We all know that H Tate is the leader of this team but who’s going to step up and score some points. Across the board they will have to find a way to score more points

Which brings me to West who finished a strong 2[SUP]nd[/SUP] last year only 5.5 points behind Mifflin. West had 9 placers last year in which 5 of them where Seniors three of them where champs one was a runner-up and the other kid finished 4[SUP]th[/SUP] which scored 121 of the teams 187 points. Also they have two kids that aren’t wrestling this year which is another 9 points to bring the total to 130. Here’s the thing I really don’t know who they have to replace all those big time scorers. They did pick up a kid that scored 12 points last year but they will still have to make up more than 100 points to be in the race and I just don’t see that happening with this year’s squad. So there you have it not from “ITC” but from ICCLW Inside Columbus City League Wrestling. West will not be in the running to win the title this year.


Whetstone was the third place finisher last year who finished with 10 placers 7 of their placers have moved on and only 3 are remaining on the squad this season. That’s 112 points gone from last year’s team with only 3 proven scorers on this year team. So once again the question is who’s going to step up and peak at the right time of the season. Are there a few young kids on this roster that will show up and start to take a leader role on this team as we know Bowman is starting to come into his own along with the other two known seniors. However, we know that North and Bobo are the leaders of the team but to win the title in their senior year one of will have to facing off with Tate in the finals at 160.


Here’s the deal last year going into the league tournament everyone knew it would be a close race between Mifflin and West and that’s how it turned out. However this year the race for the title is wide open and there are a few teams that can win the title. For the most part there are 5 weight classes that will determine the league championship this year. It’s not because a kid is going to win the title at that weight but it will be about the runner-up and how they get there. Whoever scores the most BONUS points on the way to the finals but most importantly on the back end will win the title this year. With a few teams having multiple kids projected to reach the finals this year it’s all about their team mates and what they do on the back end.

What Coach Mike says is super valid...who will be in the mix after the League meet? For the Cowboys, of course Abdi and Em, both DQs from 2013.

Although that was a great write-up, I will disagree with 80Babby....West HS WILL be in the mix, irregardless of who graduated or did not come back out. They have a full line-up and will place many kids. Depth does the job in the City.

For the record Columbus West wrestled the City Tournament with 10 kids last year. Of these 10, nine placed and five made the finals. Four of these guys won titles (Gasca, Em, Quinonez, and Gray) not three as was stated above. Even though we did not get the job done, I was super proud of how by Cowboys wrestled in the finals. Two guys (Gasca and Em) pinned there opponents in the final while the other two champs (Quinonez and Gray) defeated tough wrestlers who they had previous lost to. I am looking forward to seeing the 2014 version of the Cowboys wrestle a similarly inspired tournament.

Knightflyer150 I know West will have a full lineup other than their big two and the transfer that came over who else can score and score some bonus points? The way I see it there are quite a few teams that have their Big Guns that will make it to the finals. On the back side the team that wins the championship this year will be the team that advances the most kids into the semi’s. That’s going to be the key because that's a minimum of 7 points for the team. I’ll see them Thursday and I might have to come back and make some adjustments.


Sackerdrag in the post I stated that 3 of last year’s champs where seniors I know Em won a title and he’s back this year.

West and Whetstone normally wrestle some DI teams, which they should since they head to Darby for "Districts" ( Knightflyer). Mifflin has gone to Nelsonville for a tough tourney, and has wrestled Clear Fork and Fredericktown (tough teams) as well. They will also be at CC...HS, along with Whetstone I believe, on Feb. 1st.

This is my 2nd year at Mifflin after several years at CC...HS and after starting the Africentric program.

I agree that West will compete, they have tough kids and good coaches, along with Marion Franklin for the top spot! As I said before, it all depends on who comes ready to battle!!
