Volquez, other than a very short stint in 1 season, never performed this way.
True. But when your team celebrates their first playoff appearance in over 20 years...by doing virtually nothing other than signing Volquez (and a few nobodies) while saying they don't have the money to pay Burnett to not retire...one must find any positive they can.

Yeah, I get where you're coming from.

Just remember, I warned you (and I'm sure most Reds and Padres fans would say the same). You will hate the guy. Not only does he suck, but having to endure a game where he takes forever to throw and nibbles every batter into a 7 or 8-pitch at-bat is brutal.

MLB has jumped the shark.

The Yankees are being investigated for tampering because the team president Randy Levine used Trout as an example of a guy he would give a 10 year deal to because of his age, but Robby Cano at 31 was not given the Yankees poor history with Arod's deal at the same age.

They did confirm that Cano's agent gave them a chance to match his deal minus 5 million if they wanted to keep him (10/235). The Yankees passed though they said as they were not going to give him 10 years. They thought 7/$175 was a fair offer and stuck to their guns.

I knew when I saw that 10 year deal comment someone would make a big deal of mentioning Mike Trout's name, but it took about 2 minutes for the formal tampering complaint to be filed.

On the bright side for Trout at least he knows what the Yankees are thinking about. He will hit the FA market 2 months after turning 26, and should get the richest contract ever handed out in pro sports if he keeps at the level he has been. Knowing the Yankees have you on the radar only drives that price higher.

Not now that his value comes with a 30M dollar bounty. We'll see if he lives up to it.

Always thought it was funny on the hitting commercial when they showed kids hitting off the tee there was one kid far on the screen who just oblitered the T and missed the ball completetly

Not sure how much I trust an article that says Choo was brutal in center, and Billy Hamilton will definitely be an upgrade at that position.

He wasnt brutal in the OF.

He misplayed/lost two in the sun in one game early in the season, but overall he did fine.

Those advanced metrics that compute range and stuff like that, maybe? Seeing that reminds me of a few years ago when Nate McLouth was with the Pirates and came out of nowhere. He got a Gold Glove that year, while being considered average or so in CF by guys blogging the team who paid attention to those advanced defensive figures. I don't think he committed an error the entire year, but he was considered to have subpar range as far as covering the field and his defensive numbers were considered more a product of him not making mistakes with the balls he was able to get to.

Losing two balls in the sun, while rare IMO is nothing. The sun is part of the game and 2 balls lost in a season is nothing. Anyone that has ever sat in the front rows of LF at GABP the first two innings knows it simply impossible to see everything.

Choo's defensive play had zero to do with the Reds not living up to what we want.

What do you Reds fans think about this trade? Votto and Cingrani to Tigers for Scherzer and Castellanos? Reds get the current AL Cy Young winner at the top of his game and one of the best hitting prospects in baseball, while Tigers get a great young pitcher to develop while Smyly enters the rotation and could maybe move Votto to third or keep Miggy there and create the best 3-4-5 in baseball. Thoughts?

No thanks. Scherzer is a Cy Young winner and a Boras guy who is FA eligible in 2015. I never want to pay the money he would command to someone that could blow out an arm on any given pitch.

He was one. He's now the starting 3rd baseman, and only 21. But the guy is projected to be a total star, and watching him in person down in Toledo, he had some incredible pop lighting it up late in the season. Put him in there and you have a solid future star at 3rd or first, and in the mean time have the star pitcher needed to win a playoff series

The Reds wouldn't bring him up until 2017

Choo reportedly turned down 7/140 from the Yankees because he wanted them to basically match what they gave Ellsbury. They then signed Beltran instead.

I know he is a Boras guy, but for the love of God can you imagine turning down 7/140 if you're Choo? I would never have dreamed bidding would be in that ballpark for him.

Boras must have a mystery team out there somewhere.

Keep dreaming. Can't put all your eggs in his basket. Andy Marte was the next big prospect for Cleveland at 3B. How'd that turn out?

And Miguel Cabrera was the next big prospect for Florida at 3B as well. How about that one?
