We had an extra team vying for the cellar this year (last year, it was just Rittman and Chippewa), but we also had an additional team make the playoffs this year. I think it was more polarized than normal (fewer "middle ground" teams), but all-in-all, I don't think it was down much.
Agree - plus I think the conference deserves some credit for one of it's own making a deep run. I think '02 and '11 were good/proud years for the conference just because of individual teams being in the final game - regardless of the records of the other conf. teams.
I guess it could be argued that the conference being weak a certain year could allow the better teams to be fresher and less likely to be banged up for the playoffs, but our WCAL teams making the playoffs and, especially, making a playoff run has to reflect well on the conference. It's unfortunate that it might be impossible for Northwestern and Norwayne to both make the second round this year since they are likely to play each other next week.
