Should have been at the State House yesterday in real support but that would have actually taken some effort and you would have had to get out into the real world. SB5 opponents far outnumbered SB5 supporters.

I think that you and I are basically on the same page here. I was not trying to imply that teachers are the best and the brightest. Nor was I trying to imply that having an alphabet soup after your name makes you a good teacher. I was trying to say that plenty of highly competent individuals make teaching their career of choice. Many current teachers had successful careers elsewhere prior to coming to education. That being said, their are also a fair number of poor teachers and the current system does not do enough to rectify that situation.

Maybe I am just too sensitive about that particular quote but to me it goes far beyond intelligence. To me it implies that teaching is an inferior profession and that pretty much anybody could do if they wanted. Somewhere in the vicinity of 50% of new teachers quit within 5 years. So are they the can'ts of the can't crowd? Do they go back to the 'real' world and they are in the can crowd? Its just a ridiculous statement that I think colors peoples view of the profession. If you want to be a good teacher, you work hard and you are talented. If you want to be successful in the business world, you work hard and you are talented. Successful private sector folks can be successful teachers, or they could fail. Successful teachers can be successful in the private sector, or they can fail. Teaching should be a desired and respected profession. Unfortunately our current education system does many things that only serve to reinforce this stereotype. I think that merit pay and eliminating continuing contracts would go some of the distance to fixing that situation.

Who's tearing them down? If you work in the private sector then you agree that your wife's benefits are probably far better than your's, why should that be the case? Why shouldn't her benefits be more inline with her level of education instead?

Actually, if your job is at all stressful, phone calls are annoying, because it occupies more of your faculties, and you can't engage it on your own time.

Yeah, taking time off work anytime you want to protest a bill ... THAT'S the real world, alright.

No, dwcrew was probably at work, earning whatever pay he can earn, which has likely already been affected by the economy, so he understads why it is so important to be at work doing what he should be doing ... and doing it to the best of his ability.

I've got the solution!!! Let's give every school a printing press for $100 bills. Let them print all the money they need like the fedgov does. Give every teacher a $250,000 salary, lifetime FREE healthcare, and a $1 million pension. Hell while we're at it lets just get the fed to print about $900 trillion more and give every American a few million dollars. Liberal Utopianism, got love it!

Kidding aside. Nobody wants to tear down teachers. And nobody wants kids education to decline. And nobody wants to endanger first responders. That's simply BS union scare speak. It is a simple math problem folks. If the revenue isn't there then the expenses HAVE to be cut.

If your income was $100,000 and you spent $100,000 and now your income is $50,000 you cannot continue to spend $100,000 like nothing has changed. Why is that so damn hard for educated folks to understand?!?! THE MONEY ISN'T THERE!

Should we turn off heat and electricity in the schools so we can pay all the healthcare, pensions and salaries of the staff? Maybe we can auction off the school books and desks to give raises?

Same here, but due to the high efficiency and work ethic associated with the private sector, I was able multi-task and send emails to all the above officials while simultaneously maintaining a high-level of work, which will hopefully keep me in line for a Wall St sized bonus.

The beauty is, I get a TON done every day. I keep the forum open, and when I get a spare 90 seconds or so, I type on here. It's called "maximizing your time."

I commend you for practicing your Constitutional rights. I do. I disagree with your stance on this issue vehemently, but I can appreciate your desire to exercise your rights. I still find it odd that you took off work to do it when the issue surrounds your benefits ... which you get in exchange for working (in theory).

As for the "behind the computer" comment, I don't hide who I am on here. Hell, there are PLENTY of people here who know who I am. Why do I interact mostly with people via computer? Simple. My day job requires me to be behind one for 8+ hours, and my side job is completely Internet-based.

Sounds like a lot of work, right? It is, but I'm earning what I make.

They should have a banner day today in Columbus since a lot of them are off again today so as to make it a 4-day weekend, given that Monday is another teacher holiday. Amazing how that works. Of course, the suffering of the final work product is secondary.

I am not sure how post count is relevant to this thread at all...but okay. We're all here to do the same thing you are doing: voice our opinions and engage in conversation and debate. Just because someone has a different view than you doesn't mean they are here to pad their posts. That literally makes zero sense.

Believe it or not you can actually learn a lot from reading through the various threads in this forum. I know a few teachers but do not speak to any on a daily basis. Hearing from ernest, gblock, etc is giving me a chance to hear their side of things. Just because I haven't changed my opinion doesn't mean I haven't been taking the information to heart.

sure we have nap time for your kids at school.. lol.. because the parents can't get the kids to bed on time the night before.. ha

I think because Ernest was the one that brought it up from a teacher's perspective, everyone is ignoring the ramifications it will have for the rest of state employees. Teachers only make up half of who this bill will affect. It will also affect the people you need someday like cops, firefighters, ems, and employees in the emergency rooms you are being brought to in some cities.
