I'm not shocked by this either. F-22 aside, military spending (despite the excesses & abuses of the MIC) to insure potent national defense is a necessary evil. Carter had the same mindset about it and it ultimately backfired. We should not be doing health care "reform' now, or cap & steal, and the stimulus was nothing but political pork that has done nothing to increase anything other than debt.
Now is a time we should be cutting spending and finding ways to stimulate the private sector instead of relying on a theory to stimulate the economy that has been proven to be a massive failure (Keynesian economics).
You want to point fingers at Republicans for PAST grievances in over spending, be my guest. But don't try to equate what has gone on then with the record setting pace we are involved in NOW. It's not the same, no matter how you try to spin it.

To say it doesn't need to be debated is declaring things settled when that simply isn't true. Kind of like the whole global warming scam and Al Gore saying the debate is over. That was also false.
