Just carrying a weapon does not make for an expert or preparedness to use it.
Training and proficiency of a weapon is important. I go to the range weekly and practice.
If I’m to use this weapon at some point I what to be able to use it effectively and safely. To many time those that get a CCW will carry but not continue the additional training…that a problem.
I suggest to anyone if you buy or carry a weapon …….be proficient with it and learn how to use it.
Agree 100%. If you have any doubt in a situation that involves using your firearm, you should not even reveal that you have one and NOT USE IT. Most gun fights occur at a distance of 2-4 feet and fire 3-4 shots. No one here is looking to play robocop and shoot a guy with a knife to someone's throat at 20 yards... thats just stupid. At the most, proficiency at 10-15 feet is more than enough. Like I said before, if you shoot someone at that kind of distance, you better have an EXCELLENT reason. You better be able to state exactly what was life threatening about the situation as well as be able to state why there were no ways to avoid or diffuse the situation before using your weapon. Any idiot can shoot a gun, but when it matters can you effectively maintain composure, keep a steady hand, diffuse the situation if possible, and if need be, put two in the chest and one in the head.

This is also a quote from the same article:

"So Charles Branas's team at the University of Pennsylvania analysed 677 shootings over two-and-a-half years to discover whether victims were carrying at the time, and compared them to other Philly residents of similar age, sex and ethnicity."

So basically they analyzed 677 shootings. Were they random? Gang related? retaliation shootings? Pretty vague. I would have to bet my lunch money that many of the victims were NOT law-abiding citizens who are proficient at using their weapon properly in a bad situation. Sounds pretty anti-gun activist to me.

Another quote from the article:

"While it may be that the type of people who carry firearms are simply more likely to get shot, it may be that guns give a sense of empowerment that causes carriers to overreact in tense situations, or encourages them to visit neighbourhoods they probably shouldn't, Branas speculates."

Key word- speculates. this entire article is a one-sided anti-gun bias brain who could not speculate beyond what he wanted to find. Go ask the families of Virginia Tech students if proficient carriers are a good idea or not. If I am not mistaking, ALL of the people that died that day were unarmed.

Do you use your P220 as your CCW? If so, i was curious as to how you like it. I am trying to decide on what caliber to carry. Im about 6'1, 290 and I can handle a .45 but not sure if I should. Was debating between that an a 9mm (obviously much cheaper to shoot).

9mm have presented a few issues to police officers who carry them, deflection of the round tops the list. I hope no one shoots at someone through a windshield, but that was one of the instances of the round deflecting off auto glass. There has even been talk of the round deflecting off heavy fabrics at extreme angles. One of the other issues police talk about is a drug induced criminal taking 5 or more rounds to the chest and still able to proceed toward them for a period of time. The "stopping power" is a topic of conversation.

Personally I carry a .40 caliber. A little bit harder punch and makes a little more mess. Not as expensive as a .45 ACP.

as a concealed carry weapon, i'd doubt shooting through glass would be a big issue. I'd carry the 9mm and if shit ever gets real, aim for the face.

I was trained when I was 13 on how to respect firearms and use them properly. I will train my kids as well. I think it is an important skill to know. I hope I never ever have to use mine on anyone, but you never know. I just have a little 410, I love it! Very little kick, I have a bolt action, great gun.

The burgler had to have some sort of weapon (just read below, he had a knife) and if queen didn't have a gun the burgler would have easily done whatever he wanted to queen.

Between myself, my sister, and my dad we own probably 30ish. They all are at my dad's house in his safe though.

Anything from an assortment of different hand guns to a couple hunting rifles and shotguns. Our "pride and joy" though are two fun ones...

We have an AR15, and a WWII Russian issue SKS.

Our AR15 has a silver/stainless barrel like this one...


Our SKS is similar to this one...


I live in a pretty good neighborhood and until all 3 of my boys are old enoughand properly trained I don't want a gun in my house. Once they have been properly trained, I will bring a handgun in for defense and keep it in my bedroom.

I'll find the link later but the criminal actually took 8 rounds of .40 center mass and still got off something like 20+ shots at the officer and it took him over 4 minutes to expire.

A good +p 9mm ammo works fine.

Actually it's higher than that, if you assume the middle point of each of the options ... more like close to 5 guns each. It's a gun BONANZA

I did use the middle point of each option and used 11 for the >10.

Maybe I suck at math, but I'm getting an average of 2.85...or almost 3.

We live in a safe neighborhood and have a nice ADT system. Therefore, I don't have the need for a gun. I went to school (elementary) with a kid who got in his father's gun cabinet and blew his head off. I'll take the chance that my location/alarm will scare someone off, in lieu of losing one of my curious children to an tragic accident.

I do use the P220 .45 as my personal CCW carry weapon. When you think of the distance of most conflict 15 to 18 feet and the stopping power (stopping power big factor) of the .45 IMO it the best weapon to carry (if you can handle it and train using it with proficiency, 18 feet I can put 8 rounds into a top of a pop can) Sometimes I do compete with the P220 .45 just to keep sharp using it.
Note: For some reason one round drop low and left about a inch sometimes,,, but if you shoot for mass what in a inch?

I like the belt leather hostler best but the behind waist band holster is good also if your looking for holsters. I have two special plastic holster made for the P220 and P226.

I train using the P220 .45 (does cost a little) but after 50 to 100 rounds and then moving to the P226 9mm for a little more practice is a good transition for me.

I got the P226 9mm for competition (less cost, more rounds per clip and less kick for rapped fire).
Also for the home / wife usage if need. The P220 .45 is a bit much for her to handle. The P226 .9mm is something the wife and my girls shoot. Making it a family activity.

Carry and buy what you want ...but training and practice is the bottom line to safety and effectiveness.
One other thing ...buy quality weapons ...cheap does not always answer the call

the training isnt a problem. i was raised around shotguns and rifles. not so much handguns but i feel good around them now. i just wasn't sure if it was worth the extra money to go with the .45 over the 9mm. i think i may go with the .45 because if i am ever in a situation to have to draw, i am going to bet that my aim won't be as good as it is on the range and the larger caliber will help.

A good qaulity .45 and 9mm the price is the same ...don't go cheap.
