Just saw once upon a Time in Hollywood. I enjoyed it immensely. 9/10 maybe DiCaprio's best film outside of departed.

Shutter Island, The Revenant, Inception, What's Eating Gilbert Grape?, The Wolf of Wall Street, Basketball Diaries, and Django were all pretty excellent. Frankly, I think he's had a few other ones turn out solid as well, though they might not have been as great outside his role in them (Great Gatsby, Titanic, The Aviator, Catch Me If You Can, Romeo + Juliet).
Dude might be the best actor to have a body of work in my lifetime.
DiCaprio is easily my favorite actor.

I actually thought he was better in Django. But he was excellent in this one. Pitt was amazing, but both should be recognized.
The scene with Leo and Olyphant shooting the western was some great stuff.

I am with you on The Revenant, Shutter Island, Wolf of Wall Street, and Inception.
I truly believe that anyone who was able to pay enough attention to Inception that they knew what was going on the whole time absolutely loved it. I believe the people who didn't love it weren't able to follow the movie. I know that's a "no true Scotsman" fallacy but I am not using it as fact, just my opinion/anecdotal evidence from people I know.

I'm not as big of a leo fan as you are by the sounds of it. I thought Shutter Island was bad, didn't like Inception (though I recognize I'm in the minority on that take), Edgar was just awful - really a painful watch, Great Gatsby was bad, found the Aviator to be very dull even though I liked his performance.
When I think of DiCaprio and his best roles/films I immediately think of The Departed. That's his best film. The Revanent (which I forgot about until you reminded me) would probably be his 2nd best. Once Upon a Time in Hollywood would be next for me. To your point about best actor's body of work in your lifetime, I would think Pacino, Diniro, Daniel Day Lewis, Tom Hanks, Jack Nicholson, Brad Pitt, and Jeff Fucking Bridges made movies during your lifetime :)

I guess, from my perspective, that's a Daniel Day Louis movie that Leo happens to be in, because DDL overshadows him in every scene they share and basically carries everything despite only being the co-lead. Which isn't an criticism of Leo, although he did improve as a lead after that one, as DDL was just in a zone in that one and would have overshadowed just about anyone playing against him.

I sort of felt this way about Leo in the Great Gatsby. Watching it back now, it feels like the 2007 Cavs. Overachieving because one star carried the load. Had it not been for DiCaprio's performance, I might not have liked the movie. As a result of it, though, I really enjoyed it and have watched it several times since.

Departed is so fucking bad. So many mailed in roles. Nicholson just collected a check. Leo and Dalon were good, that’s about it. So many awful plot holes Scorsese just ignored.
Pacino, Jack and DeNiro are definitely before Leos time. And he is better than Pacino, who made a few solid gangster movies then became a yelling caricature of himself. I hate almost all of Hanks’ roles, and when I don’t, he isn’t as good as the co-star (ironically, this is most obvious in catch me if you can). I cede to you Pitt and DLL. Pitt is one of the best character actors ever. His looks actually hurt the roles he would be pitched, unfortunately. I’d say he is about on par with Bridges, who is incredibly underrated historically.
For the record, I like Tom Hanks, and I think he's one of the most versatile actors to grace both television and the silver screen.

How can you not even mention True Romance? Because he only wrote it? It's one of my all time favs.

Mentioning any of the names of the big time actors with DDL's is silly. Bale is the closest in talent. I've always thought certain big time actors were overrated. If you basically play the same person in almost every movie, you aren't that great of an actor. I know that seems like common sense, but apparently it's not. Some of the big name actors are likeable and their filmography definitely means something but it doesn't necessarily mean they belong in the discussion for best actor.

I've always thought there was something to this, yeah. Range should count for a lot. I think a good barometer is whether or not an actor can play a good hero and a good villain. Might not be an all-encompassing barometer, but I think it's a pretty good one.
