I watched Black Panther this past weekend.  I'd give it a 6.2/10.  It was entertaining, but I felt it was definitely over hyped.  It wasn't any better than any of the "best" comic book movies in the last 15 years imo.  Unless the standards have dropped significantly, the social commentary around the movie definitely gave them a boost in their ratings.  Black Panther is currently a 97% on RT and it didn't come anywhere else to feeling like a movie in the mid 80s%, let alone 97%. 

 

Edit:  They showed the preview for Avengers, and this has to be the end of it right?  If you all have ever seen the "too many cooks" video by adult swim, that is exactly what the latest Avengers preview felt like.

When I watch a comic book movie, I expect to set great special affects and shit blowing up. I don't expect comic book movies to solve world problems and I don't think Black Panther did that even though some people tried to make it out like they did. It definitely did not live up to the social hype. 

Also, I can't fucking wait for Avengers. It may be over crowded but I'm hopeful they can deal with that. If not, oh well. Lol. I'm also really curious to see who they kill off and who they bring back and how far Thanos gets. They've been building that up for so long I can't wait to see if they can make it pay off.

As a fan of comic book movies, I want to see big time villains, not ones who are just tough for regular men. I understand some people want more realistic characters, but I don't need that in these type of movies. In my eyes there is no reason that Avengers shouldn't beat BP at the box office. 

John Wick: Chapter 2

It's really not that often when a sequel is every bit as good as the prequel, but this delivered.  I could have watched this without even seeing the first one and been totally entertained.  A little bit of the scale of this criminal underworld was too over-the-top, but other than that, I had no complaints.

Dr. No -- 6.5/10

Good movie, but as the first Bond film, you could tell they were still finding their formula. Almost more of a detective film where Bond is searching for clues and information, with the main villain and his lair not playing much of a role until the final 30 minutes. Also a bit light on the action compared to other Bond films I've seen, with one of the action scenes being one of those old movie hilariously fake car chases (see two cars dueling on the road; cut to shot of Bond grimacing and swerving "behind the wheel" while obviously fake scenery scrolls in back of him). Intro was really cool, Ursula Andress being near naked is a nice thing to see and Bond's "That's a Smith and Wesson and you've had your six" is a great pre-kill line.

The Accused - 6/10. Overall meh, but Jodie Foster was fantastic. 

Mantooth and I are seeing The Quiet Place tomorrow. I'm excited for it. 

Is anyone else really looking forward to Chappaquiddick?  I think it looks like it could be really, really good.

Went to see it today.  That's about where I'd rate it.  7-8/10.  The acting, writing, and score were all significantly better than I anticipated.

I'm guessing that the fact that I went in with such low expectations helped, but there were several haymakers to the feelz that really got me.

The early films stuck to the books almost 100%. The only real deviation from the book in Dr. No is that he didn't work for SPECTRE in the book.

Oh yeah, I've read that. It was SMERSH or something like that which was the "SPECTRE" of the books, wasn't it? Watched From Russia With Love last night (saw a good chunk of it before, but was drinking, so I only remembered the awesome Bond vs. Grant fight on the train) and they had an in joke about that, with Bond asking Grant if it was a SMERSH plot all along and then immediately figuring out it was SPECTRE from Grant's response (which eventually turned into him painstakingly describing the entire plot).

FRWL was awesome. More action, the villains had more personality (hell, one guy came off as well-written despite only (1) winning a chess match effortlessly after being summoned by SPECTRE NUMBER ONE, (2) arrogantly describing his "foolproof" plan and (3) being killed after arrogantly dismissing his plan's failures as everyone else's fault), Robert Shaw's Grant was an actual physical threat, while Dr. No's advantage was simply having a fortress of his own, populated with a lot of troops.

Super Dark Times on Netflix. 

6.5/10, I found it entertaining. The title is fitting. It's a dark movie, minimal happiness. The asshole kid brother (Rose's brother) from Ozark is in it.

Agreed. It's probably the best Bond movie...I'd have Goldfinger a close 2nd.

And yes...in the books it was SMERSH, since the Cold War was heating up at the time. SPECTRE didn't make an appearance until Thunderball.

Thank you. I tried to watch it on a plane a couple weeks ago, and couldn't even finish it. I Tonya, 3 Billboards and LadyBird were all exponentially better, IMO.
