I’m more worried China uses this to try and seize control over Taiwan and then all hell breaks lose.

A couple higher ups have told me they are expecting cyber attacks on our banking system and having a small amount of cash on hand may be smart.

in recent history, we invaded Iraq because Saudi nationals trained by Israeli special forces under the direction of a wanted terrorist being openly harbored by Pakistan flew planes into the WTC and Pentagon. So it's logical to think that the first military response to the Ukraine situation would be to fortify Taiwan.

it's also kind of shitty of us to not stand with these poor bastards after we made them give up their nukes in exchange for protection from Russia. Such is life though. Hope everyone got those applebees wings half off.

And the Russians were a signatory to that agreement to assure Ukraine of its territorial integrity.  Very shitty.

Ukraine would have been the 3rd largest nuclear power. It was not an option for them to keep them. It would have been a nightmare.

Perhaps, but it sounds like we had a part of that bargain that is highly doubtful that we're going to live up to.

A lot more problems would have been created if they kept them is all I am saying. Loose nukes and scientists for hire would have been a bigger threat than it was in the mid90s.

Also, from a Russian point of view, the deal has lost merit due to the breaking of all the cooperative security deals I mentioned. Not all their views are valid of course.

Correct. Has always been when it involves any of the permanent security council members.

Ironically, Russia is the Chair of the UN Security Council (until March 1st).

Yup and 2 of the P5 are Russia and China. The UN is worthless on large geopolitical issues

Hard to not get a little choked up seeing pictures of young Ukrainian men kissing their wives, children, girl friends as they see them off so they can go play with the Russians in their sandbox.  Godspeed.

I thought it was because they hated us because of our freedom.

Maybe being energy independent is better than some fake environmental rules.

When deals are ripped up future deals lose their credibility.

My boss has a friend, who is one of those freelance reporters that run to the front lines.  She apparently got on a plane this weekend to head to Kiev and is there right now.  Those people are fucking crazy.

I saw some of them were getting arrested just for being at the protest last night even though they were just covering it for news

I read where over 1,700 people were arrested in Russia.  Russians have been warned by authorities any negative comments about Putin's invasion of Ukraine would be treated as treason.

Those people deserve credit for putting their necks on the line.

I've had Sky News on pretty much non stop. I'm always thinking, why the fuck are you STILL there? Bombs going off in the background.

I have a friend born in Kyiv, raised in NYC. His family got the hell out, went to Germany.

I think some of the reporters that go to these places are brave.  And some are adrenaline junkies.  They're part of the landscape and they do bring the reality of war to the rest of us - at least in some small way.
