If you hate Big Red, then you must really despise Iggy, Glenville, Mooney, Massillon, and quite a few others. They suck a lot more players from their surrounding areas than we do.WooHaa! wrote:The people from out of state don't know the local details. I can explain the hate. It is because they have been using talent from other areas to win. I know... I know... open enrollment. But, the fact of the matter is Big Red is not exclusively Steubenville. If it were, many would have more respect. But, the local schools, as well as those across the river, have been gutted of players. It hits the schools that have been grooming these kids in hunior high, then lost these kids, below the belt.
Good players transfer to Big Red because they want a college scholarship and they especially want to play in Div. I. Look at how many players from Big Red have gotten college scholarships over the past ten years or so. Then look at any other team in the valley. That is why the good players transfer.

There is another fact that has to be brought out. Back in my day, most Steubenville kids attended Big Red, Ward 6 kids and Wintersville kids attended Wintersville, Weirton kids attended Weir High, and so on and so forth. But times have changed and its not just because of open enrollment. Today's kids are being forced to pay more attention to their futures. I never even applied for an academic scholarship when I was in high school because I knew I could afford college without it. A lot of today's kids can't. If I were a high school football player living in the valley and I thought I was good enough to get a scholy, I would shop around to see which high school would give me the best chance of getting it. I don't think I would attend Creek or Buckeye and sit around hoping that someone would see me at a combine. If I were the player's parents, I would also shop around. A few of those players who shopped around a few years ago are now playing Div. I college ball.WooHaa! wrote:The people from out of state don't know the local details. Don't knock these kids for trying to do what is best for themselves, and don't knock Big Red because we accept them as transfers. This is the way the world is today. I don't see anything changing in the near future.

The Steubenville-Wintersville border line is right there around DiCarlo's Pizza. However, everyone west of Argonne Avenue (Jeff Tech area, or whatever Jeff Tech is called today) was part of the Indian Creek School District. I assume it is still the same today. The 6th ward is that area from Argonne Avenue west to Starkdale Presbyterian Church and DiCarlo's Pizza. All of those people have Steubenville addresses and are part of Steubenville; however, they are part of the Indian Creek School District and go to the Indian Creek Schools.
EXAMPLE: Wally Pesuit, Wintersville's most decorated football player (played in the NFL for the Dallas Cowboys, Atlanta Falcons, Miami Dolphins, and Detroit Lions and in the USFL for the Chicago Blitz and Jacksonville Bulls), grew up behind what used to be called Wamsley's (right off of Lover's Lane). [I don't know what Wamsley's is called today!!] Anyway, he had a Steubenville address and lived in Steubenville. However, he was in the Cross Creek School District and, therefore, went to Wintersville schools throuthout his academic and athletic career.

What is the policy concerning the transportation of open enrolled students to their school of choice?

Big Red doesn't, as far as I still know, bus any high school age kids...you have to find your own ride.

They don't use a bus. They use a van.
Ask toronto, they can give you the pick up times.

I've also seen the van. The day of the Steubenville/Massillon game I watched a van pick up a Big Red football player from lovers lane circle.ManO'War wrote: Big Red doesn't, as far as I still know, bus any high school age kids...you have to find your own ride.

I did read in the paper that they are expanding the bus routes this coming year, so maybe that's the areas they were talking about.
I suppose there is something wrong with that too???

Nope, nothing wrong with that, its part of Steubenville and if the kids there wish to go to Steubenville thats their choice. I don't see any reason why buses shouldn't go there. Was just making it aware that school transportation is offered out there.ManO'War wrote: I did read in the paper that they are expanding the bus routes this coming year, so maybe that's the areas they were talking about.

Will other districts be allowed to bus students from Steubenville to the school where they would be open enrolled? i.e. Can Indian Creek now send buses downtown to get students?

You live in Seattle, yet you know how many transfers Massillon gets compared to Steubenville? Fill us in, how many did Steubenville get last year? How about Massillon? Iggy? How bout Glenville?FairwoodKing wrote:If you hate Big Red, then you must really despise Iggy, Glenville, Mooney, Massillon, and quite a few others. Open enrollment ..... If a child lives in Mingo and wants to go to BR then the parents bring them in. The same for IC or anywhere else. UNLESS that child is handicapped or impaired.bduq37 wrote: What is the policy concerning the transportation of open enrolled students to their school of choice?
As for H C kid , He either drives or the parents bring in. Its not rocket science. Why all the haters??
Who care's what child came from what school. Obviously he was not lovin it there and wanted a chance at a scholarship. Why would anyone complain about that? Do any of you want to help put him thru college? Speak up!
No... didn't think so. Quit dissin the kid and the parents. Families do what families have to do. If he has a better chance for some exposure for college and a scholarship at Big Red , who are we to judge?

It does get a little complicated when Steubenville starts sending buses into Edison's district for kids. Can Creek, Toronto, Edison, Buckeye start sending buses downtown for kids who "open enroll"?BRfootball1 wrote:Open enrollment ..... Really? College scholarships? With the exception of a couple in the last 30 years, do the big boys of college football really make it a point to come to Steubenville? It's hardly a breeding ground for NCAA greats. I mean, Ohio State doesn't even give them a long look. There have been a few others in the last 30 years to achieve football greatness without going to Big Red.
Granted, Steubenville does get looks from D1 from the likes of Akron, Toledo, BG, and Kent, but I just heard that Ron Powlus was in the area recruiting a kid who is NOT from Steubenville High School.
