I know when Big Red rebuilt the high school building a number of years ago, they fully expected to get students from the surrounding areas via open enrollment. The school buildings should be able to house a great many more students than what we have now. I think the current enrollment is just over 500 in the high school. In my day (the mid-1960's), we had around 1300. We were actually quite comfortable with that number. And, of course, the building has been increased in size since then.

Would be curious just to see how many of the 284 students that left HC for other school systems were athletes and where they end up.

It is a shame to see the area come to this. I hate to see school systems in need. For the sake of the kids in Harrison County I hope something works out for them.
Maybe another reason for students moving out of Harrison district and on to somewhere else is because mom and dad might have lost their job. We all know times are tough all over.

Most of those students are from the grade schools that are being talked about for closing.

You may be right. That is still a big drop in enrollment. I think old Wells High School had even a bigger enrollment in my dad's day (early 1930's). I know the population of Steubenville was considerably bigger back then.

At any rate, the Steubenville school buildings are not close to being filled. The more kids we get from open enrollment (football players or otherwise), the better off we are.

OT, Creek knocked Big Red out of the sectionals yesterday. I wonder how Creek can routinely beat Big Red's Ohio Valley All Star recruits in every other sport but football.

You'd think that since Big Red recruits up all the superior athletes they'd dominate every sport. Maybe their success in football has more to do with hard work, coaching, etc.

Fairwood, I've heard from several people that work in the school system that Harding is busting at the seems.
Harding is busting out at the seams. So is Wells academy. Wells needs their own school and get those little kids out of the high school. I heard they are taking 2 of the high schools rooms and giving them to wells. Harding is expected to expand some time in the near future. No room for 5-8.
Wonder what goes on in that new sports complex BR has??

This comes as a very big surprise to me because I thought that the schools had plenty of room. They just rebuilt Harding School a few years ago. Why didn't they make it big enough?

They moved the 5th graders up there this year. I don't know what they have planned...maybe another school?

On another subject, how do I go about joining the Big Red Boosters Club? I would like to join before I move to Steubenville. My father was a member for at least 50 years and they ultimately made him Booster of the Year. I still have his encased football in my home.

It wasn't Marietta, although they also voiced their disapproval of our invitation. Frankly, there weren't many people that were actually in favor of this move.

Big Red fans, in general, definitely weren't for it. The current member schools in the big school division, in general, weren't for it.

I think that when our administration got wind of all of the negative feedback, it re-evaluated our position.

It wasn't Marietta, although they also voiced their disapproval of our invitation. Frankly, there weren't many people that were actually in favor of this move.

Then it must have been Cambridge because they were the other team that voted against our admission.

You're right, I did not see a single Big Red fan that was happy with this move.

If no one wanted us in the league, how did we get this far in the negotiation in the first place?

B/c you asked. ;) I don't know..I'm not buying the whole 'they wouldn't play us' BS. Not saying you're wrong..b/c I don't know. But if they are in the league..they really wouldn't have much of a choice. If they refused to play..then kick that team out. I mean..it's just Cambridge..not like it would be a huge loss. :)

It isn't 'BS.' My sources are iron clad. Others can vouch for me, if you think I am making it up.

I had the same response as you, btw. Just because they were refusing does not mean that Big Red was precluded from the conference. But, it was going to create potential problems and I think it was one of the many factors that played into the decision to opt out.

There was virtually nothing but negative feedback from the first day that the move was announced... Negative feedback from all sides.

It just wasn't a good fit.
