May have been said arleayd.....

but reds wont need a 5th starter till the 11th I think..so whomever wins the 5th spot very well could start at AAA Unsure when the AAA and AA season starts....but they may keep him off the official 25 man for a position player or BP guy, and have him throw a sim game on the 6th to keep him in the normal 5 man rest period.

If i remember reading rite the reds either have 3 off days in APril or they only need a 5th starter 3 times.

Wood is on the 40 man....Leake is not so to put Leake on they would have to take someone off.

I think that is what Ive been reading....

Looks like Leake is the 5th starter. This is a surprise to me. Wood is more polished and ready IMO. Interesting.

Yea, the #5 starter will only get 3 starts prior to MAY 15th, that's why I would've liked Wood as the #5 guy, while Chapman and Leake were working down in Louisville.

If they would have chosen Wood who is already on the roster, they couldn't have had the extra hitter(Francisco) on the roster until the 11th, because once they optioned Wood down, they couldn't get him back for 10 days.

Well I'll be a monkey's uncle!! He actually went with the better pitcher. Of course, he did keep an irrelevant has-not-really-ever-been in Cairo, but I guess they really didn't have much of a choice with cutting Miles. Someone has to be able to back up Votto. I was a little surprised to see Ondrusek make it and Fisher not. I'm not too surprised Lincoln is getting a shot, but I still maintain he will be on a short leash. But the biggest surprise for me was Juan Francisco making the team. I know he has hit well, but I really didn't think they would want him to sit on the bench behind Rolen. I expected him to be in Louisville, only coming up if Rolen got hurt or if he learned how to play some left. Regardless, I like having his bat available. Let's just hope Baker and Jacoby don't screw him up too much.

Yeah I agree. I can't believe they'd keep a young guy like that who isn't going to get to play that often. Maybe if they give him a start or 2 each week at 3rd mixed in with some pinch hitting, plus a day in the OF would work? I just hope they don't put him on the team and then not use him

I think it'll be a five game gig for Francisco with him going to Louiville when Leake gets activated for his start on the 11th.

I was a lil surprised that they put Leake in the 5 spot. I think he is deserving but I thought they would keep him down in AAA.

I dont know how many options Wood has. Leake of course has them all remaining. They can bring him up/down alot if the like especially since the 5th guy wont be needed much for the first 4-5 weeks.

Thought theyd go with Wood because he is a lefty..and more experiences..and on teh 40 man. PLus..if he faltered then they have another lefty..Chapman...to take his spot if he continues to impress and gets stretched out after his back tightness.

I like the pick tho...dont get me wrong. Leake by alla counts has been throwing well. Stats dont tell all the story.....he has been down in the zone and that is where you gotta live in MLB.

Have to wonder tho what type of roster moves will be made before opening day to manuever.

86 wins this year........

I'm not saying Cairo is good, but Miles was bad all spring, and he had one of the worst seasons out of any baseball player in the league last season.

How does Miles still have a spot with this team?

Miles (and Balentein) were designated for assignment. Meaning that they are actively trying to trade them. They have 10 days to decide what they want to do. If there are no takers they can send them to the minors but I believe that Miles and Balentein would have to agree to go.

In 157 at bats last year, Miles hit .185 for the Cubs

I think it simply came down to Mike Leake throws strikes while Travis Wood was a little erratic. And with the Reds defense, you go with the guy who doesn't walk batters.
