I'm not against the premise of red light cams, but the functionality isn't realistic. They give tix for legal turns on red, and the worst part is, they ticket the car and not the driver, which is far from fair. Chillicothe had them for awhile before they were voted down by the citizens.

For as well...but they should put a sign up with it as well for the first few months after installing it, after people in the area know its there, they wont need the signs, and wont go through the lights...if you never put a sign up, only the people who have gotten caught will learn its there and it wont be nearly as preventitive of accidents

I'd be FOR red light cameras if they were used to assist investigators in incidents of intersection crashes, criminal offenses, and the like.........but not as an unattended ticket writing device.
Absolutely against the radar unit disguised as a doghouse and placed along the side of the road.

Against...
1)they are dangerous because drivers jam on the brakes to avoid going thru and getting a ticket resulting in rear end collisions.
2) too often they are used to shakedown the public....no consistency of yellow light length...tickets are issued by a distant company who owns the cameras, and the proceeds are split with the local community treasury.
These are not criminal violations but traffic citations that result in no harm.( if it were used as evidence in an accident, that would be alright).
3) philosophically, a person should be allowed to explain the situation to an arresting HUMAN who would have the authority to determine whether a citation should be issued.

Not a fan of the fact that they ticket the car and not the driver. I would hate to get a ticket in the mail because someone I let borrow my car ran a light.

We don't need government watching our every move.
If we are really concerned about safety then I'm all for toughening the penalties for repeat aggressive drivers. To me this is the most dangerous thing for safety and a red light camera really does little to nothing for that.

I'm sure you'll get a much more diversified opinions and from more folks in this forum...but perhaps this is destined for the Politics forum??? As far as red light cameras go...I'm currently agnostic on the issue. I do have a friend from high school that never went to college but is makin a decent living installing them in places. But, then again I suppose I have high school friends making a decent living selling weed to teenagers too.

This. I hate how the concept of "if you aren't doing anything wrong, you have nothing to worry about" gets used to justify things like this. All you have to do is say "This MIGHT take one drunk driver off the road!", "This MIGHT catch one terrorist!", "This MIGHT prevent you from getting cancer because you're the only non-smoker that visits the local dive!" AND/OR "This MIGHT prevent meaningless infractions!" (because, let's face it...if you run a red light and there is no accident, you essentially jaywalked or inadvertently shoulder-bumped someone...ie: did something only a total nutcase would turn into an issue...and if you run a red light and there is an accident, well, you'll likely be facing consequences whether there was a camera or not) and people will line up out of the blue to praise Big Brother taking control. Many of these same people will condemn Big Brother when he gives big handouts to car companies and banks and takes control of health care.justincredible wrote: Against. Too big brother-ish.
Apparently having intrusive "powers-that-be" is both good and bad at the same time.

Every camera I've seen have warning signs stating red light camera, notifying me theirs a camera....Fab1b wrote:This!Gardens35 wrote: I'd be FOR red light cameras if they were used to assist investigators in incidents of intersection crashes, criminal offenses, and the like.........but not as an unattended ticket writing device.
