Of course you disagree. But you're sort of right, the best do rise above. I've never claimed Anderson was going to be a HOFer. But he could have been a pretty good QB if given the right chance, maybe even good enough to manage a Super Bowl team. Contrary to what ESPN wants you to believe, you don't HAVE to have one of the best 3 QB's in the league to win a ring.

With out reading the thread my .02 is that a Pro player should know what he is getting into when he comes to cleveland. If he plays well he will be put on a high untouchable pedastool (Josh Cribbs). If you don't you will be boo'ed when you are down. (DA, Tim Couch ect). You are a pro athelete perform well or deal with the concequences.

I don't necessarily disagree, but any controversy I believe would have been averted had DA shown any type of confidence, leadership, attitude, heart whatever in practice or on the field. It didn't happen. Part of the reason the switch was made was because it was said Quinn had a presence in the huddle, how or if true I don't know, but if that quality was attributed to DA there would have been no question who the starter should have been. You can't be in the most important roster spot on a team without a killer instinct, DA never had it and never will.

I mean, I think I'd have a hard time leading guys who bitch about practice being too hard too. Especially when they're your veteran players...

It's just funny how DA was a model citizen and took all his criticism while he was part of the team and then when he goes on a rant after he's let go, he gets attacked again. People don't like to taste their own medicine apparently.

It should be unthinkable though--not in the 5th round, I'm talking 1st round. 5th round is fine, especially for a guy like Pike. I'm talking 1st round mainly, 2nd and 3rd even. I actually like the move of them releasing Anderson--I mean one of them had to go and they already seem to have made the commitment to Quinn. IMO, they should stick with Quinn for a few years--see what he has, he's still young. But in the meantime build that defense up--try to help the offense in FA. Build the D with the draft. Until they get a stellar defense, it doesn't matter who is playing QB.

You'd think they'd learn this lesson from the other teams in their division.
No, not Pike although they do like him.

The guy I was talking about is John Skelton from Fordham. Dude is 6'5" & 260 lbs with a rocket launcher for an arm. He's raw but I think Holmgren could make something of him. He was projected as a 6th-7th rounder prior to the Combine but after throwing, he's climbing.

That wasn't an issue until Mangini was running the show last year. Crennel ran a country club.

Right, we all saw what the Ratbirds did with a mediocre to below-mediocre Trent Dilfer. And yes, maybe under similar circumstances, they could have developed Anderson into a Dilfer-quality QB, but that wasn't the case. Now, Anderson is a shell of what he was when he came to Cleveland. Now, he has shown no ability to overcome obstacles. Now, he has shown to be affected by outside distractions. Now, he is a six-year veteran who had one good season three years ago. Now, he is looking for a job that he may never get.

I don't see anything wrong with taking a chance on a guy in the 5th round...probably not going to get much value there anyways and if nothing else you fill the depth chart.

He had a Pro Bowl year and the team was good. Then he sucked, but the whole team fell apart around him--they took all his receiving options away and he had a joke of a coach. That's what other GM's see. No way he doesn't get a chance as a back up.

How can anyone say Derick wasn't given his chance? They signed him to a new contract after 2007 even though they had drafted BQ and he helped lose that horrible game in Cincinnati. Remember we missed the playoff's due to his play in the last 3 or 4 games. He alone was not the problem but he sure didn't do himself any favors ending that 07 season in the tank. He was handed the job in 08' and he proceeded to stink it up for the first 8 or nine games. Sure people were calling for his head. He played terrible. Romeo stuck with him and after seeing Quinn play we all know why. And for people to say he didn't complain rumors are he did complain alot just not in the press. I also remember when he did talk to the press you could tell he was upset but always seemed to avert slamming the organization. He couldn't wait to be cut so he could do just that which he did. I say good riddance. Sure he had a pro bowl season in 2007 for the first 10-12 games. After that he stunk it up and everyone knows it. He showed his true colors and the only reason he got invited to the pro bowl is because he was the only one left.

We're NOT getting Troy Smith unless HE pays US to play here.

Stopped reading after you said you missed the playoffs due to Derek Anderson.

Missed the playoffs due to swiss cheese defense.

Really?

I want to see Smith get a chance, I think he has a great potential for this league. And he's already proved that he deserves a chance IMO.

I'm sure someone will give him a look. If Charlie Frye is still in the league, DA will get a shot somewhere. I was referring to his rant when he implied that he wants to be on a team that plays Cleveland and 'rolls them.' Clearly he wants to play. I don't see him on the field again except as a backup replacing the injured starter or in mop-up duty.

Well, won't you be pissed when he overcomes adversity and then comes back and spanks the Browns and proves you wrong twice...

You stopped reading one sentence too soon.
He alone was not the problem but he sure didn't help. You telling me throwing interception after interception doesn't cause a problem.

I'm telling you that putting up a Pro Bowl season means it isn't your fault. That defense was seriously AWFUL.

I'll make you a deal. If Anderson ever starts against the Browns and his team beats them, I will change my avatar to his picture and my signature to something like "Derek Anderson whipped the Browns and I was wrong about him being a viable NFL QB. SQ Crazies is a god of football knowledge." Until then, I still contend that he is a terrible QB and will never amount to anything.

Playing well in the first 12 games doesn't absolve his piss-poor play when the playoffs were on the line. Four interceptions were at HIS hands, not the defense.

No deal, I don't care what you do with your avatar.

Typical Browns fan, doesn't even know who to blame when his team loses so it's always the QB's fault.

My point was that Smith's agent has been practically BEGGING the Browns front office to sign him to an offer sheet but the Browns have "no interest."
