Like others have said the areas surrounding UC get a bad rap that is largely undeserved. It is a large campus in a highly populated area and incidents do happen to UC students off campus. But the rate of incidents is no greater than it is for anyone else living in the area. I have lived two blocks off campus for the past 3 years and have never been approached, attacked, mugged or anything else in that time. The worst thing that has happened to me or my possessions is that my car was keyed.
As for the actual campus it really is a thing a beauty. It is pretty obvious when you take a couple of steps onto campus that UC has one of the best architechture schools in the country.

Main Street have all been featured in various architectural journals in recent years. UC has reworked east campus as well hiring some of the best architects in the world including Frank Gehry who designed the
Vontz Center. This is the view from my apartment.
Yeah I am a bit biased but UC's campus is fantastic.
