HEre is an FYI for you...OSU actually has GREAT tradition in college basketball. Certainly one of the top 10 in traditions. Yes, they lack the national titles, and it has been a LONG time. But in number of final fours, great players, etc, etc...OSU is a top ten program. And its only getting better now with Matta as coach. I stopped reading at this post because this was exactly my thoughts. There are only a few places I think he would leave for and I doubt he ever gets the offer.

Well I didnt mean he isnt capable by any means. My statement was more directed at only about 5 jobs as I see being better. Duke and UNC are the only ones I see where Matta has a chance (based on the coaches retiring soon). Self, Howland (and I argue UCLA isnt that great of a job) and Cal are young enough where Matta wouldnt even have a shot.

Duke just doesnt seem like it would be a good fit at all. I dont know why, but I see them hiring on of their own (Wojo, Dawkins, etc).

UNC I think is a pretty good fit and might look around for a coach. I just dont think Matta would get offered the position. Based on nothing at all but a hunch.

Indiana has Crean for 8 more years. Matta wouldnt leave for that job though.

Yeah, Duke I thinks its clear will hire within. Wojo looks to be the obvious pick...but im not sure how well it will work out.

UNC Im not as sure on who they would go with. You obviously follow them more, so Ill take your word for it. They have hired within (or at least Alma Mater) the last couple times, so it wouldnt shock me at all if they stayed the course again.

I know many Blue Devil faithful don't want it, but I want Collins at Duke. I love Chris Collins and the passion he has for Duke. His intensity, talent for recruiting and knowledge of basketball (he was designing Xs and Os in Osh Kosh B'Gosh or whatever the hell it is with his father Doug when he was two). He hasn't held a job outside Duke as of yet (aside from his stint under Bill Laimbeer and the Detroit Shock in the late '90s and '00, I believe), but Collins is a perfect fit.

Would he be a success? It's hard to tell. But, as a beloved fan of the Blue Devils, I am willing to give him the opportunity to try.

If Duke doesn't go with Collins, I think it's almost 95 percent that Duke will go with either Wojo or Dawkins.

I made that comment about Oregon, I in no way shape or form think Matta would leave right now. But I think it could be a job like that that could lure him.

Even with the Phil Knight connection and all the amenities that go along with it, I'm not sure Oregon would be a great move more Matta. I might even argue that Oregon is just as football-focused as OSU is (to differing degrees obviously) as compared to its basketball program. And OSU's facilities can probably match anything even Knight can help Oregon out with.

It's an interesting proposition, though. But very unlikely.

Two moves I could see Matta making (to a school outside the Super Six) are to Connecticut or Syracuse once their respective coaches have moved on. These are both huge universities with big athletic budgets that could afford a guy like Matta, and are basketball-centric schools with great histories. I think Matta could recruit the type of players he has been with even more success in either location, and win big. Something interesting to think about if nothing else.

I just think a job out west, somewhere biggish could lure Matta. Not necessarily Oregon, that was just the one that popped into my head since most like it will be open in a week.

Ohio State's athletic budget is twice as big as UCONN's and Syracuse's.

He'd go in a second for a more prestigious position. Basketball is a much bigger at Kansas, KY, and several other schools. Basketball always be #2 at OSU. Not so at some other places. For whatever reason (football? The seating at the Schott?) the students have never supported basketball at Ohio State. There have been exceptions but rarely do you see the raucous crowds that you see at every game in other arenas. I was listening to a game on the radio the other night and you could hear individual fans yelling at the refs along with the player's shoes squeaking in the floor. Pretty sad. Oh yeah, he'd go.

He had the #1 class with Oden and next year's class is ranked in the top 3. I don't think OSU is hurting Matta's recruiting efforts.

I would see a move to Syracuse or UConn as a lateral move. Those jobs might have been better before Matta arrived , but he has made OSU a better job and on par with Syracuse and UConn.

And, why would a midwest guy, who has recruting down pat in the midwest, pick up and move out west when he has never been there? Makes absolutely no sense.

I think people discount being the "second" sport at a school's advantages. There is not nearly the pressure as a Kentucky or Indiana, yet Matta has proven he can take OSU to the highest level (National Championship game) and can bring in #1 classes. And OSU can match any other school but maybe Kentucky in money for a basketball coach. Carolina, Duke, Indiana or Kansas isn't going to get in a bidding war for a coach.

The only jobs that are on a higher plane than OSU would be Carolina, Kansas, Duke, Kentucky and Indiana. Any other job, including UCLA at this point, would be a lateral move. And like previously stated on this thread, Bill Self will be at Kansas for the next 15+ years and Carolina/Duke will most likely hire within their program's "family". That only leaves UK and Indiana, both of which have been open twice since Matta has been at OSU, yet Matta is still in Columbus.
