I know it's kinda pop country but this song reminds me of my childhood. In the backseat of a pickup truck towing a horse trailer coming up 75 from Maryville Tn after a horse show

That's cool, even if I may simply be a single drop of rain, but I will remain...

In case you don't know, this thread's existence has forced me to play the disc I have this song on and put it on repeat...for the past 40 minutes or so now.

I'm listening to a lot of 80's country and reminiscing on my childhood.

good thing I am going with a friend this weekend to southern Ohio to buy a horse, all this reminiscing is making me miss the days of traveling to horse shows every weekend, hell starting right about now (march).

Just in case anyone wonders what we did when I talk about going to horse shows when I was a kid..

With the Tennessee Walking Horses

Winning the Celebration (which is like the world championship) is a pretty damn big deal

Quarter Horses

I obviously had more fun when we showed the walking horses, LOL

Garth Brooks was a great performer. But in the annals of country music, he's not top 5, maybe not even top 10.

My favorites would be Johnny Cash, George Strait, Alan Jackson, and numerous others including Garth Brooks but I wouldn't rate him number one.

Cash was the man after he let others do his writing

I consider Aldean more Country Rock. Which is still a good place to be. There is nothing 'poppy' about him. It's not the 'traditional' country music..but it's still country.

Two of my favorite and recent female country singers:

Ashton Shepherd

Miranda Lambert

and speaking of Miranda Lambert, I think her and Blake Shelton do a really good cover of an old Shelly West & Dave Frizell cover

I am confused. I admit, I am the farthest thing from a country music fan -- in fact, I don't think we even have a country music station here in New York. So, help me out: what defines "Country Music?", and why doesn't Garth Brooks fall in that category, according to some of the huddlers?

I don't understand why everyone gets so upset over whether someone is "true country" or not. Everyone has different tastes, and country music today obviously isn't doin too bad seeing how it's the most popular genre of music based on the amount of radio stations across the country. Taylor Swift, Lady Antebellum, Rascal Flats are definitely cross-over pop/country but its obviously workin for them. They're just helping make country become more popular and reaching a broader audience.
Personally though, I don't know if you'd consider him "true country" or whatever...but favorite artist is Dierks Bentley. Puts on a GREAT show.

I would probably put him in the top 10 country artists, but the top 3 performers. If you have ever been to a show you know why. I have an interesting theory on the "crossover" artists. Do you think Clint Black, George Strait, or even Chris LeDoux might have an extra fan or two because of Garth? Crossover artists do amazing things for the country music industry in that they bring fresh blood to the market that may not be there otherwise. Once there (possibly just tuning to a country radio station to hear Taylor Swift's newest song) they are exposed to some other really great music. I think The genre needs the crossover artists to prevent dying off with their aging fan base.

Alan Jackson for me I never liked Garth. He has a few songs that are good but outside of those 3-4 he is ordinary.
