I believe the Tigers are going to play a tremendous game tomorrow. This does truely appear to be a game of contrasting styles. I can tell you one thing the Tigers are gonna bring it hard. I'm sure we haven't faced a pass offense like this before, but I can also assure that this will be the most physical game Ashland will be in up to this point. Here is an article for today's Tribune.

Howland, Ashland study in contrasts
By MIKE McLAIN Tribune Chronicle POSTED: November 12, 2009 Save |
HOWLAND — If it’s variety you like in a football game, you might want to check out the Division II, Region 5 semifinal between the Howland Tigers and Ashland Arrows on Friday night at Canton Central Catholic High School.
On one side the Tigers will try to control the clock and wear down the Arrows’ defense with a steady diet of runs. The Arrows will counter with an offense that can be described as pass happy.
“They go by air mail and we go by Pony Express,” Howland coach Dick Angle said. “We both get the job done. It’s what you believe in and the talent level that you have.
“What they do because of the tall, slender receivers they have fits their philosophy, and the big, strong linemen we have fit our philosophy. We’re both getting good results, so something has to give.”
The teams will enter the game with identical 10-1 records. The Arrows’ lone loss was to Division III playoff qualifier Dover, 44-21. They’ve reeled off nine straight wins since that defeat, including a 28-7 victory over West Geauga in the first round of the playoffs.
The Arrows’ passing game is sparked by junior quarterback Marcus Fuller, who’s completed 178-of-304 passes for 2,625 yards and 25 touchdowns. Fuller has no problem spotting his top receivers — 6-0 junior Chris Thomas, 6-1 senior Chris Dowlatt and 6-1 senior Matt Smith. Thomas has 38 receptions for 641 yards and nine touchdowns.
Dowlatt has 39 catches for 581 yards and seven TDs, and Smith has caught 29 passes for 528 yards and four touchdowns.
“They have a stable full of receivers that all look like they’re cloned at about 6-1, 170 and run like the wind and catch the ball,” Angle said. “They have a big, bruising offensive line protecting the quarterback. That’s why they’re 10-1.”
The good news for the Tigers is that this is their 12th game of the season. They wouldn’t have wanted to face a prolific passing team earlier in the season.
“We were awful young in the secondary when we started,” Angle said. “(Cornerback Mike Mangiarelli) was the only returning starter back. Cody Tynon had played a little bit before he was injured last year. Those guys now have 12 games under their belt. Are they young? Yes. Are they experienced? They better be experienced because they’ve played 12 games.
“We understand that they’ve never been challenged like they will be challenged this week. We look at it as a great opportunity to see what our talents are in the secondary.”
Mangiarelli is the anchor of the secondary. Kenny Pozega starts at the other corner. Tynon, Zac Wilson and Dan O’Brien share time at the safety spots.
While that group will have its hands full trying to ground the Arrows’ passing game, Ashland’s defensive goal will be to stop Howland’s ground attack. Mangiarelli leads the way with 1,103 yards and 13 touchdowns, while freshman Deveon Smith has added 714 yards and nine touchdowns. Fullback Brandon Neilan, who has 366 yards and six touchdowns, gets the tough yards on the inside and in short-yardage situations.
“It was nice to see a 98-yard drive by us the other night (in a win over Medina Highland),” Angle said. “I’d like to see about four of them this week. It’s still about us. We understand that every team you play from here on in is a great team. We have to tackle a little better than we did last week and score in the red zone. We got sloppy late in the game last week.
“We have to put in a better special-teams effort. We put in too much time and energy in our special teams to have any type of breakdown. Everything is correctable.”

You are assuming that because The Arrows are a spread team they are not physical. You will be surprised. Especially by the defense. They can play the run. I'm not so sure Howland can cover the pass. The story from the Tiger fans is the same one we have heard all year. The great run teams just keep falling.

I don't think anybody said the Ashland wasn't physical - just that this is going to be the most physical game Asland will have played in up to this point this year. I think most Howland fans would agree that we haven't seen Ashland's brand of offense yet. It's high school football and alot of the outcome rides on momentum turnovers and teamwork. Expect some of that tonight from both teams. I just feel the Tigers will be ready. I assume most Arrows fans feel the same about their team. Gonna be a great one!

Outstanding job by the Arrows in the second half. The defense rose up when it was really needed, and the offense put up a quick 19 points. Keep rolling Arrows. We Believe!!

Yes #73 is a soph 6'4" 305 and #4 Lewis is a Freshman ( what a load to bring down after getting dragged along ) with #44 the other horse a junior , that is some kind of backfield to try to tackle!

Ashland faithful, I'm willing to concede the one point lose to you earlier. In exchange I'll enjoy our one point win last night.
Good Luck In the Reg. Finals
BTW it's a shame Clearfork got stuck on our side of the bracket or the OCC could had all three reps in the Reg finals.
