Yes, there are more sports than just football. No matter how this works out, I think it makes Big Red look bad. After all, we did apply for membership and we were accepted. True, the circumstances of our acceptance were not the best, but the fact remains that the majority of schools did accept us.
It does piss me off that people who are not part of the Big Red family are making nasty comments. They need to get their house in order before they criticize us.

What I would like to know is how hard it has been to schedule games for the sports other than football? It seem to me that we have done quite well just with the teams from the OVAC. We don't have to schedule games with teams from New York for boys' basketball or girls' volleyball. I still think that the whole issue of the ECOL comes down to football and that Reno was the deciding vote to join and then not to join.

Egg on Face, welcome to the Steubenville Big Red. Classic example how to educate your students on how to fully research anything before you make an educated decision!! Oh wait....................

The other sports at big red would take a beating if they played in the league so that may have something to do with it and the football schedule would be tougher with some of the teams they would play.The paper makes it sound like the league approached big red and they turned them down but big red approached them and then said no after the were voted into the league.Would they have said yes to them if they could play in the white division with the weaker teams and not the black division with the big boys?

This conference would weaken our football schedule. This year we are not only playing at Massillon (and there's still the issue that Dover canceled a contract with Massillon after they got beat) but we are playing three teams that played in their respective state championship game last year. I think you could drop the Washington DC and the New York teams and Brooke was a 1 yr fluke and will not compete with Big Red this year so you would have a tougher schedule by joining the league.I think Massillon is a great game for Big Red but the Inkster team will not be anything like they were last year and Big Red will whip them by 3 or 4 touchdowns this year.FairwoodKing wrote:This conference would weaken our football schedule. I'm interested in hearing the "official" reason for backing out.
I have read the speculation from some posters but these issues were known prior to applying.
I was looking forward to this league. Football would be in favor of Big Red for at least a while but all the other sports would have been very competitive. IMO

Inkster is like Glenville and Iggy. They "recruit" from all over the Detroit area just as the other two get the Cleveland talent. As far as Brooke is concerned, Big Red would have beaten them last year just as we are likely to beat them this year. But they are still the defending state runner-up and they have to have something. They will give us a tougher game this year than Marietta or Cambridge would have given us.
Don't forget Ursuline. They are the 2-time defending state champ. No one in the ECOL can approach them.
As far as the New York teams are concerned, they are sometimes very tough. In 2005 St. Joe's was picked as the best team in New York despite their loss to us.

There is more here to this story than meets the eye. I don't know why the school turned down the invitation, and I assume we will never know. I'm only sure of one thing-- they had a reason for doing it.

Don't hold your breath. You will NEVER here the official reason why Big Red decided to back out. Other than football, Big Red would have struggled in the rest of the sports anyway. We would have been fine in baseball and wrestling....basketball would have stuggled...dont know about track..and the soccer progam has been on the rise.
Overall the OVAC is better than the ECOL in all the non football sports anyways, so we might as well stick with playing the OVAC teams.

Take a beating in baseball?? Big Red is number 2 in the state alltime in baseball and always fields good teams.
The baseball program has been state runnerups 3 times and have been to the state tournament a few other times.

That's my opinion...i don't speak for the school, and I wouldn't have agreed to join that league in the first place.
How great of a league can it be when Dover beats everyone in the league by 4 to 6 TDs every week???
