This is sorta how it went down:
Haters:
Me:Kelly is ~.500 his first year! He cannot win on this level.
When someone (not sleeper, he shouldn't be on here anymore) can provide some legitimate criticism of Brian Kelly's coaching ability (spare us the Declan Sullivan comments) then we can have a conversation. "Notre Dame has been terrible for twenty years" is not only untrue, but it has very little to do with the future of the program. He not doing any worse than plenty of big time coaches to provide any evidence that he cannot win on the level. On the contrary, he has won at three different programs on three different levels on competition (D-II, non-BCS conference, BCS conference). Jim Tressel, who is a tremendous coach, went 2-9 his first season at Youngstown State and 7-5 at Ohio State. Nick Saban won six games each in his first two seasons at Michigan State and went 7-6 at Alabama his first season. Mack Brown went 1-10 not only his first season at Tulane but also his first two seasons at North Carolina. Pete Caroll went 6-6 his first season at Southern Cal.
It is pretty freakin' obvious there are plenty of Hall of Fame coaches who, when challenged with turning around a program, do not have instant success.
