What we learned from Notre Dame in the Irish's 20-16 win at USC on Saturday night:

1. Tough enough in the clutch: The Irish offense really only produced in the final minutes of each half, but it was enough to get the win. The impressive thing about the performance was that Notre Dame ran the ball late when it needed to, unlike in years' past. Robert Hughes bowled over Trojan defenders during the winning drive in the fourth quarter, while Cierre Wood chipped in some big gains. The Irish finished with 147 yards on the ground, while Wood and Hughes combined for 158 yards. Not spectacular stats, but good enough and tough enough to win.

2. The defense isn't just improved, it's dominant: This is no longer a fluke. The Irish defense has now shut down four straight teams that came in with gaudy offensive statistics. Notre Dame has allowed just two offensive touchdowns in those four games, and USC's lone trip into the end zone came after a turnover set it up on the Irish 2-yard line. The Trojans finished with only 261 yards. Whatever magic potion defensive coordinator Bob Diaco found after the Navy game needs to be stored and reproduced for next season.

3. November to remember: The Irish couldn't have had a much worse September, with those losses to Navy and Tulsa and the Declan Sullivan death that raised the scrutiny around coach Brian Kelly. Nobody saw a 3-0 November coming, especially not with all the injuries the team suffered. But this month's success is a result of the foundation laid in the weeks and months prior as the players learned how to win. A 7-5 season and potential trip to the Champs Sports Bowl now has to be considered a success, and if the Irish do indeed return to prominence under Kelly, this month will be remembered as the turning point in the program's trajectory.

And yes, I can compare to Brian Kelly to Jim Tressel. I can compare Brian Kelly to anyone I want. That's the point of analyzing sports...to compare and contrast similarities and differences between players, coaches, and programs.

Tressel was less proven as a coach when he entered Ohio state than brain Kelly was when he came to nd

As for the subject of Brian Kelly and Jim Tressel, comparing them to see who is better is a bit stupid (as some OSU trolls think we are doing), but there are definite similarities and in my opinion.

Tressel built a Youngstown State program, and won national championships in doing so. He came to Ohio State with a 135-57-2 in fifteen seasons.

Kelly built programs at Grand Valley State, Central Michigan, and Cincinnati, and won national championships in doing so. He came to Notre Dame with a 171-57-2 in nineteen seasons.

The only real difference is that Tressel went right from a small school powerhouse to Ohio State and Kelly gradually worked his way up. If Tressel had gone to, say, Akron first they'd be almost identical paths.

Tressel's 7-5 first season was memorable because he laid the foundation of a winning program, his teams were competitive while fighting tooth and nail, and he BEAT MICHIGAN. Likewise, Kelly's 7-5 regular season is memorable because his teams were competent throughout and improved every game, were competitive with #5 Stanford and to a greater extent #7 Michigan State, and finally BEAT SOUTHERN CAL.

If you can't see the similarities, you probably aren't very bright. I'm not saying one is better than the other, no one knows that and it's really pretty fucking dumb to argue about. But I am making the point that 7-5, while improving every game, is laying the foundation for a resurgence. Yes, I said it ccrunner. The last decade of overall futility doesn't mean shit. The ND logo on the shoulders doesn't have an influence on their play or where their potential limit is.
