Americans are not very popular at these Olympics. Celski got booed by the Canadian fans when he bumped a Canadian player in a race. Ohno got blasted in the Korean press by the Korean who won the gold in the 500. Lysacek got attacked by Russians going all the way to Putin for beating Plushenko.

Oh, well. We're tough. We can take it.

to the average person it was a nonmedal hockey game that didn't mean a whole lot, not very much interest.

they will get much better ratings with skating, skiing, and bobsled.

Really hard to believe USA put it to Canada. Guy tried to compare it to defeating the Russians in '80, but it's not that big. Real punch in the nads for the host country though. :D

The NBC primetime got a 17 last night and the hockey got a 6. As Colin Cowherd said, NBC actually knows what they are doing when it comes to the Olympics.

It's tough to compare ratings when one is on MSNBC and the other is on NBC. Had hockey been on NBC, the ratings probably would've been right around the same, but importantly, the ad revenue would have been a lot lower due to less commercial breaks.

The audience that the prime time NBC olympic coverage caters to wouldn't allow a 3 hour hockey game to continuously play on NBC.

from what i remember hearing on ESPN though, ice skating isnt getting the ratings it used to. and heck, putting it on USA instead of MSNBC would have better. USA was showing Pirates of the Caribbean last night during the USA/canada game.

The ice dancing ratings tonight will be huge as will the ladies' event later in the week. But you're right, figure skating is down somewhat.

Very true. What NBC wants to give you on prime-time is a combination of 3-5 events in 20-30 minute blocks. Like three speed-skating heats (w/ commercials between each 90-second race), followed by some skiing and then a bit of bobsled, for example (which I think Saturday night's coverage was). Add in a few Bob Costas' features/studio stuff. It's sort of a "we'll have a little something for everyone" line of thinking.

Airing a full 2-3 hour event that, due to the nature of the sport, can't have commercial breaks every 3 minutes, just isn't in their plans.
