A Stoops Question

I was reading some old newpaper articles, and I see after a Massillon/Youngstown South game in 1980, a quote from Ygst. Souths coach, and his name was Bob Stoops. Was this the Stoops boys dad? I mean, being from Youingstown, I figure he has to be related somehow, but how?

Probably either the father or an uncle. There are still some close relatives around the area. I think one of the nephews was an grad assistant at Walsh University this past season.

It was an uncle of the Stoops that are currently coaching in college.

Imagine that? You wanted to try reliving a bit of Massillon Tiger history. The problem was the articles you were looking for werent in 1980. You're mythical titles ended around 1970!!

The guy in the article may have been an uncle.

The Stoops brothers (Bob, Mike, Mark, and Ron) are all sons of Ron Stoops Sr.

Ron Sr. coached football and baseball at Mooney for 20+ years. His death is one of the craziest stories I have ever heard. He was the DC at Mooney, and Mooney was playing Boardman (where his son Ron Jr. was the DC). Mr. Stoops felt chest pains and stopped coaching during the fourth quarter and Ron Jr. came down from the press box to be with him. Mr. Stoops watched the rest of the game...which Mooney won in overtime...and then they put him in the ambulance. Shortly after the ambulance left the stadium, he died.

My dad played for Mr. Stoops, and says he is one of the greatest men he has ever met. I wish he could have stayed on earth longer to see how well all of his sons and grandsons are doing.

I will agree with that. Must have been one hell of a coach/father.

He was Ron Sr.'s brother, he lived in Struthers and was the head coach for South in the early eighties. I grew up with his kids. From what I remember he was a well loved coach, but there was some sort of physical incident (hit a player maybe, a la Woody Hayes) that lost him his job. Speaking of Ron Sr., I somewhat fondly remember playing him one on one in Bball during gym, getting my but kicked, then him chasing me around the gym with a broom (because I was chewing snuff) while being called an apple a**.

If Mr. Stoops called you an apple a** he must have been really mad. That might have been the strongest language he used.

I remember Ron Sr. refereeing the intramural games on Saturdays, if you were one of the jocks from the football team playing then your team had a definite advantage. He was an outstanding teacher who is still greatly missed.
