Anyway, PH jumped out 9-2 in the first minute, but from there Start was very steady. Their freshman PG looks like she's 8 year old, but she's got ice water in her veins for sure.

PH wasn't hitting like Sat, but it was a possession or two the whole way through except for a point around halftime where Start pushed it to 10.

Potter's was very fast, and as Pariah notes, incredibly fast hands. If you bobble the ball, it's gone.

In the Hiland game PH had 22 fouls to H 11. PH is always going to have a lot of fouls given the way they play. Hiland did a nich job staying close the first half but PH just turned it on in the 3rd and that was that. Still I'm sure Hiland will grow from that! Not going to see any team near that good in the run to Columbus.


And Wow profm. I figured you would simply come on here and say the Potter House girls out worked the Hiland Girls and if the Hiland girls would only put in more effort and more work they could have been competitive. As I predicted, that only works one way in your mid.

They had 10 girls play 4:59 or more. Hiland played 12 girls, two of which played less than 2 minutes. Their bench outscored Hiland's bench 26-5. (Given Hiland scored 19 4th quarter points and their non-starters only scored 5 points the entire game it stands to reason they had a good number of minute from starters in the 4th quarter!)

(It's not a knock on Hiland. Hats off to them for taking this challange against a team and not backing down!) Hard work makes the difference only in the case where the talent differential is within reason. Kenyon College can work very hard at football, but they are never going to beat Ohio State. The talent differential in Hiland vs. Potter's House was not that wide, but great enough that all the stars would have to align to get it any closer than it was. If a crew called it tight, it would help any PH opponent. Every move they make is accompanied by a bump, shove, elbow - very physical. It forces the officials to choose between stopping the game every 5 seconds or calling the most eggregious contact. They chose the latter against Hiland. They seemed to call it tighter with Start. Your numbers are only relevant to your conclusion if there weren't 44 or 66 fouls they could have called. But that would have only been part of the stars lining up.

Dave said his team was happier in the locker room after a 23 point loss than they have been with many of their wins. I think that says it all.

All 5 PH starters and most of their bench will sign with major div 1 colleges. We don't have that kind of talent in Berlin, Winesburg, and Walnut Creek - and before 300 jumps in, I'll include Millersburg!

Toledo Start must've represented pretty well--could Toledo possibly have a girls state champ in basketball this year?

Start is the best team I saw, and they proved it by beating Potter's House. I thought they were the best team in the state prior to the Classic and I haven't changed my mind. That team is loaded and they are well-coached. Competition is tough in DI though. It only takes one bad game, but I think Start has to be the favorite.

it'll be interesting to see how they come out and play tomorrow night at CCHS---could this be a trap game???

Hoover shot 9-14 from 3 for that game. Patterson asked at the scorer's table at half-time for 3 pt % (5-8 at the time) and its not like they were all wide open looks. Some were, but most were somewhat contested. Hoover shot so well from the floor that their FT % pulled their overall shooting down to a whopping 59-60%. WH was at about 31. The two teams combined for 5-19 from the line.

I know it evened out in the end with the foul calls. There were quite a few late in the 3rd and in the 4th quarter when the outcome was completely set. I was referencing more the fact that PH got called for 2 offensive fouls and 6 total in the first quarter against Start. But like I said, I know it wouldn't have affected the outcome of the game.

As for the "not a knock" - I think you've got a fairly good idea on how the program works, but also feel that most of what you say is about a 70/30 split of criticism, sarcasm, and veiled barbs vs. respect for what the program has accomplished, so forgive me if I take it with a grain of salt.

Not much talk about Tri-Valley. That is one nice team. Big girl can handle the ball. Don't think they can beat Start but it wouldn't surprise me to see them in Columbus. Coach was extremely excited after they beat Boardman and Coach Yellandscream. I'd love to tell you what he said to me, but the censors wouldn't allow it!

just to inject what i say after watching the last 4 games on monday...

-i was very impressed with #12 from toledo start, she sa junior guard and shes the real deal! i was impressed with her more then anyone the whole day, she got in some foul trouble but she still balled like crazy...there big #50 is ab beast too, shes gonna make a great college post. also liked the freshman guard for twinsburg #1.
-i think malina howard (6-4 sophomore) outplayed samarie walker (uconn signee) completely...walker obviously got hers but howard def outplayed her in my opinion, walker also struck me as lazy, im sure ill get some flack for this but i watched her awhile and i dont know why but she played lazy in my opinion, she didnt step up and hit another gear against big competition...twinsburg also had a couple real solid support in #11 and #21...
-antoinette bannister is a complete stud, im not sure theres anyway to stop her from scoring...
-trivalleys two akron commits #14 and #35 are tough! they single handedly beat boardman...who wasnt too impressive (aside from #32)...#35 has an all around game and can play inside or outside, #14 has an absolutely nasty jump shot!

first chance to get on here after the classic. wow, a lot of basketball. some very good, some very bad. agree with much of what's been said above. Start was the class of the tournament; one of the only teams to be able to match up with PH's speed and athletecism. hiland finished the tornamnet by playing a very nice game to beat a not bad divI school in Mason. If they play like that, they will be very hard to beat in div IV.
I seem to have the same thoughts re: refs every year. Standing on the floor at essentially every game and seeing the contact--jeesh! I realize you don't want to stop the game every 5 seconds to call fouls, and you want the "stars" to stay on the floor so the scouts can see them. But this is basketball-- not soccer, lacrosse, field hockey etc. there are rules in place that limit contact and at some point you have to actually call some of the contact. PH particularly is extremely physical. To some extent that is why they are so successful; if you can runsomeone over or push them down and proceed unimpeded to the hoop it's easy to score. (not taking away from their speed and skill; it's also easy to score when you can flat out outrace paople to the hoop). just saying, if you call some of those obvious fould early on, maybe the kids adjust their play to what basketball should be.
Overall a tiring weekend, but fun. I'll be good till next year.

I agree, she is an awesome talent. Fast, atletic, good shooter...but...I'm sorry, i don't think a 30 ft 3 point attempt is a good shot. ever.(unless it's a buzzer beater). Obviously she has great range, and is a good 3 point shooter. maybe she makes them in practice, and i think maybe one (out of 8-10) or so of those bombs went in, but that team can get a MUCH better shot than the 25-30 ft. bombs she was heisting. If/when she makes 40% of those shots maybe I'll change my mind, but in the meantime, try taking a couple dribbles in before shooting.

i completely agree ricola...however in talking to some of the hiland fans they were upset cause she let toledo start off the hook and not them cause she was nailing them against the hawks...i wasnt there so i cant say for myself but i talked to several and they all said she was draining them...

actually I think she made maybe 2 or 3 against hiland. could be wrong--might have been more. but she also missed (badly) several of the looong bombs she tossed against Hiland as well--paricularly in first half. the ones she made in the 2nd half were a little more reasonable range if i remember.

didn't get to see as many games as I would have liked, maybe next year. did work a shift on Sunday and that part alone is fun just mingling and being of service to all the guest's in the house in anyway posible. I thought the halftime entertainment was cool with the cow and (karioky?) and some other new stuff (per thevoiceofholmescounty web videos. only got to watch one game because of other commitments but it is truly a great event.

don't want to bring up a sore subject about lopsided scores. but to the people that rip us about beating Malvern 104-33 the first game of the season. better take look a Waterford team that was in the CIC event. did anyone notice there score from jan21 against Racine Southern beating them 110-14. so to all u Hiland basher's better look think again. Dave would have never let that happen in a million years. end of subject i will not bring up any more.
