Because I don't really see NK and SK as two very different groups of people outside of ideology.GOONx19;1870165 wrote:Huh? There isn't a country in the world that doesn't struggle with racism. Why would NK be any different?

Very monolithic society in regards to genetic makeup, religion, beliefs and very little integration from other parts of the world. Racism only exists because of immigration.GOONx19;1870165 wrote:Huh? Hopefully a rural, pure white school. I'd feel really horrible for any minorities or exchange students that had to spend any amount of time listening to him. They'd be forced to endure the ugliest of Americanism daily.Automatik;1870475 wrote:He "educates" children daily.

You're not native American. Practically everyone's genealogy immigrated to the USA.

Scott Sagan, one of the great nuclear strategy scholars, has an interesting piece out in Foreign Affairs. It lay out the case for deterrence and patience with North Korea using the Cuban Missie Crisis as an example.
It is well worth the read as he outlines all the areas where the "fog of war" and lack of clear communication could lead to disaster.

There was a Fresh Air interview with him this week that laid it out as well. Yeah, and they said they would to earlier this week. (Maybe we should start listening to what they say and taking them seriously? Just a thought...)like_that;1871728 wrote:Annnd they launched another one.
So far Trump's policies have been just like Clinton's, W's, and Obama's.
Since his fire and fury quote, Kim has launched 2 missiles and tested a nuke.
Is this what winning looks like with Trump?

oh how some forget history. The UN is in high level mettings about this right now. Do you want us to wait for them? I would guess people like you would complain either way. Any decision is the wrong decision.ptown_trojans_1;1871848 wrote:Yeah, and they said they would to earlier this week. (Maybe we should start listening to what they say and taking them seriously? History: WMD and ethnic cleansing in Iraq for years. UN sanctions (19 of them if you dont remember) that were ignored for years. Iraq kicks out UN inspectors and the US congress votes almost unanimously to go to war because EVERYONE (even Hilary and the UN) were screaming WMD. Bush went in and and kicked ass and everyone complained.
Which way do you left wing revisionists want it?

I've been saying for years that the POTUS is the face of foreign policy but that policy is primarily driven by career staffers (and it's not practical or effective to change course every 4-8 years).ptown_trojans_1;1871848 wrote:Y

And I think 99% of Presidents DON'T want a Cuban missile-type crisis. The goal mostly is to punt, and leave office without incident (which absolutely explains Obama policy in Syria and Russia, Obama/Bush/Clinton policy in Iran and NK). People get alarmed when Trump runs his mouth, but they're wrong to project his words onto Obama/Bush/Clinton because those guys were taken seriously.
So I think as long as there are career staffers able to put options on the table to punt or play the long game, that will be the course POTUS will take and means, effectively, that those career staffers do indeed drive foreign policy.

There are a few sticking points with NK.
Their unpredictability and ability to strike neighboring countries. Going into places we are fighting right now in Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, Yeman, Somalia...the ability for them to really strike outside the countries are pretty much nil.
I don't know what Japan's narrative is on this situation but I cannot fathom they aren't livid at missiles flying OVER THEIR COUNTRY.
To me, that is just one small step below an actual attack on your soil.
I have the utmost confidence we could obliterate anything NoKo has military wise but the collateral damage they could do to SoKo and other neighbors is what I believe is holding everything back at this point.

Agree 100% with this. I trust and hope that we are listening and working with SoKo and Japan on this. They are at the greatest risk in all this and have the most to lose. Give them the lead in the decision making.thavoice;1871961 wrote:There are a few sticking points with NK.

The language Trump used yesterday is the same nonsense the North Koreans have always used. Kim has successfully pulled the US down to his level (i.e. "Hey, you lookin' at me? I'ma kick your ass. Look at these guns. I can do it.")Commander of Awesome;1872538 wrote:Well he just continues to disappoint and miss the mark, SMH: https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/russia-calls-trumps-korea-remarks-a-dangerous-step-toward-instability/2017/09/19/1a6d9b56-9d69-11e7-b2a7-bc70b6f98089_story.html

maybe the language that was used yesterday should of been used by the whole UN and the US 15 years ago. You cant slam trump for words when everyone that came before him didnt say or do shit.Dr Winston O'Boogie;1872569 wrote:The language Trump used yesterday is the same nonsense the North Koreans have always used. The UN is a clown convention that the US give $8 billion a year. Maybe we should stop giving the most money and only pay what the next guy brings. Other than that, if we spend the money we get to say what we want.

President Trump signed an executive order Thursday targeting North Korea’s trading partners, calling it a “
owerful” new tool aimed at isolating and de-nuclearizing the regime.
