I am willing to be wrong, because Trump says some God awfully stupid crap, I just haven't seen it and can't find a quote or tweet of him saying that.
People are projecting what Trump says onto Bush or Obama and saying "oh no, this is bad and this is inflammatory". But this is not them, this is Trump. And in this case Trump being Trump here might be advantageous. He has a long track record of being a bloviating air bag, and so his rhetoric is not weighed the same as Bush or Obama.
They are saying "this is a red line" and Trump is "backing himself into a corner". No he's not. Trump doesn't care about that stuff, and will deny what he said or what people think he met. It's not going to be very different from Obama just ignoring Assad crossing his "red line".
But what Trump HAS accomplished, perhaps unintentionally, is a public statement that China will stand down if NK strikes first, and likely privately putting a lot of pressure on NK. That is really significant progress. It doesn't and hasn't mattered what the POTUS said so long as NK had China's protection. But now if NK attacks US interestes or allies, it can expect to be thumped (and would expect so if it was still Bush or Obama in office).
