I agree with this. So it must be the minority opinion. Congrats.

Biggest question with Archie will transitioning to a major program with huge expectations. Positives...he's got the bloodlines. He's got the setup to get recruits. Now, it's about execution. I am not sure he's that great of a coach yet, his teams usually struggle on the offensive end and have never really had a legit post game. With that said, he's probably got a lot more upside than Alford. Alford has kind of peaked as a coach, IMO, but I'm also surprised he would turn down Indiana. He's going to lose almost all of his core at UCLA and he's shown that prior to that group, his teams aren't very good. Losing Ball, Leaf, Hamilton and Alford, he's going to struggle big time next year.

If I'm hiring a coach, Archie > Alford.

Biggest reason I'm surprised Alford is staying is that he'll have to put up With Lavar for at least 2 more seasons.

Not only Lavar, but Lavar with less-talented sons entering the mix. Pretty sure the middle kid is a 3-star guy, so imagine dealing with Lavar talking shit when his son's a role-player instead of a star.

This. LiAngelo seems to be the least talented of the three kids, but apparently LaMelo has a lot of potential. He still has a couple years of high school left though, so Alford will have to deal with LaVar's dumb ass and the least talented son until then.

LaMelo pulls up from half court when the game is on the line. No thanks.

I was fine with Alford, but I'm glad it's Archie over him. Hopefully Indiana and Arizona can get a yearly home and home series started up.

I don't think Alford is a bad coach, but dude has had 22 years as a head coach and never been past the Sweet 16. Not like Archie has a huge track record of NCAA Tournament success, but it was a no-brainer to go with him over Alford IMO.

Archie's had a few good runs with Dayton though. They were in the elite 8 I thought a few years ago?

Yeah, he made an Elite 8, but beyond that hasn't reached the Sweet 16. Think Dayton has made the last 4 tournaments, but other than the Elite 8 they haven't done much once they got there.

Dayton making the sweet 16 is better than pretty much anything Alford has done at UCLA.

Yeah, this.

Archie isn't making final fours at Dayton, but it's not like he's expected to. He's expected to make the tournament. He usually does that, and then wins a few games, too.

I mean Alford has never made an elite 8. He's been at 2 high major programs and 1 mid major. So why would anyone beg for him to come to their school?

Which is why I said going with Archie over Alford was a no-brainer, lol. He's only been past the first weekend once which is what I was saying but Alford has proven to be a good regular season coach and an underwhelming postseason coach. Gotta go with the potential in Archie over proven mediocrity(relative to expectations) with Alford.

I think we are all agreeing with you lol, it was just your comment about Archie not doing much in the tourney.

I thought we were on the same page, wasn't totally sure though, lol. Was just saying he's been in the Elite 8 once and round of 32 once and that's it for his tournament successes. Not a long list like I said, but like wildcats said, his Elite 8 alone is more impressive than anything Alford has done.

being an IU grad, yours was an opinion I looked forward to hearing...and a home-and-home would be great!

I wanted Donovan, but looks like he is loving the no recruiting aspect of NBA. Met with Indiana, but couldn't come
to terms. Sounds like Archie was the 2nd choice.

As for Alford, I will say Iowa hasn't done shit since he left, and neither has New Mexico. He was the best coach those programs have had. Ironically, he has been worse at UCLA, as far as actual coaching is concerned.

I find it very hard to believe that Donovan had even 1% interest in the Indiana job.

Why the hell would he leave the Thunder and Russell Westbrook to go coach maybe the 7th best coaching job in college basketball?

A little surprising considering he sucked/was injured all year...Harry Giles is going pro. He will get drafted on the potential everyone saw before going to Duke.

Also, that is 4 players leaving Duke in the last 3-4 days. Giles and Tatum going pro and Obi and Jeter transferring. Wouldn't shock me to see Kennard turn pro as well.
