From the Washington Examiner:

The District of Columbia has moved forward on a plan to reward $4.9 million over four years to released criminals who do not become repeat offenders.

The D.C. City Council unanimously approved a bill Tuesday that includes a proposal to pay residents an annual stipend if they are not rearrested following release from jail or prison.

City officials would pick 200 people per year who are at the greatest risk for committing or becoming victims of violent crime and assign them to behavioral therapy and other programs. Once they meet the requirement and avoid trouble, they become eligible for a payout from the city.

The program is based off one in Richmond, Calif., where its developers say it has led to steep reductions in regional crime. Richmond's program pays participants up to $9,000 per year, but District officials did not say how much selected Washington residents could be looking at receiving.

I am fucking speechless.

...So what their saying is why pay cops to enforce the laws when we can now pay criminals not to commit crimes?

Dammm, our country is fucked up!

Commit some armed robbery, collect $9,000 per year. Brilliant.

I think they should also include an inflation adjuster so the $9k can increase annually; it would only be right.

In theory this sounds like it would work. There is an incentive for former criminals to not commit crimes. Kinda like an allowance. You get an allowance, but if you are bad, it gets taken away.
Problem, there is no way this works in practice. It will quickly get out of hand and a mess.

Solid idea, but the practice of this will be a disaster.

How about repeat offenders just go to jail longer instead.

I hear ya.

But in the liberal mind, if you don't commit crimes you should be 'rewarded' by having your taxes increased, or at least diverted, so that moronic politicians can use it to give to criminals (for playing nice).

It is stunning what some radicals would do with other people's money.

It wouldn't surprise me at all if DC starts paying people to vote too.

That has been occurring with libs for decades ---- 'vote for me and I will give you housing, food stamps, medicaid, and an obamaphone, for generations'.

Why not just round-up prisoners and have a turkey shoot?

if they are prisoners what to round up?

The criminals has to do a crime to receive the one time reward gift of .75 cent it would be wrong to just shoot for no reason.

Things I haven't done for which I deserve compensation:

- I've never smoked crack
- I've never committed any sex crimes (I should get compensation for each I haven't committed)
- I've never done heroine
- I've never committed breaking and entering
- I've never killed a guy... yet!

Or do I have to commit those crimes first, then promise to not do it again, in order to get paid?

Has a hard on for rights as they relate to guns, but ignores cruel and unusual punishment. Got it.

I wonder how many people they will pay for not committing more crime and then later find out they actually were still criminals. If you're charged with a crime will they automatically stop paying you or will they wait until you've been found guilty? And once you're back in jail how do they squeeze that money back out of you?
