That was one of several states' rights. Most southerners did not own slaves. The average soldier was fighting for states' rights, not slavery in particular. Many of the poorer Confederate soldiers would do better financially if the slave labor were eliminated. The New England states almost seceded in the early days of our country over states' rights.

When Lincoln with his opposition to the expansion of slavery, they saw this as a threat to the institution of slavery and that is why they left the Union. The New England secession movement during the war of 1812 era was based on the economic threat of Democratic Republican embargo and non intercourse programs, the cut off of trade because of the War and the diminishing influence of New England in the growing nation. Oh yeh and even with their complaints they chose not to secede.

A war is never fought over just a single issue. The South was misguided in their reason, but they feared a powerful central government. The Southerners were only a generation or two removed from ancestors who were alive during the colonial times when England abused the power of a strong central government.

Southern secessionism was centered on slavery, the Southern leaders who feared a central government did so because they thought that government might take their slaves away.

While that was true for many, there were also states' rights issues for others. Most could see that slavery would not last much longer because 1)They would not be able to have the trade and diplomatic agreements with the European powers who had outlawed slavery and 2) The industrial revolution would require less of a labor force because advancement of machine power.

It drove us away from an agriculture based society. Eventually, there was no longer a need for slaves/sharecroppers, and many of them migrated north. New York City, by far, has the largest black population. Many other northern (or western) cities have large black populations.

Those countries all kept trading with the South long after they outlawed slavery. Britain built its major industry of textiles on that trade. British West Indies islands like Jamaica and the Bahamas were bases for Blockade runner. The Brits were quite willing to trade for the cotton carried out by those ships. Canada was used as a base for CSA espionage. The St Albans raid came out of Canada and refused to punish the raiders.

From its inception the CSA was founded to protect and extend slavery. Its supporters all either took up arms against the United States or gave those armed forces "aid and comfort. As with any picture or symbol it would depend on the circumstance. The rainbow colors represented an extension of freedom because of the recent Supreme Court decision. Flashing other colors or symbols at times when they would be especially significant would be appropriate. For example flashing the Star of David when the concentration camps were liberated or when Israel was established would have been appropriate.
