There are few things more infuriating and dangerous than two vehicles going the same speed side by side down the highway, and traffic backed up bumper to bumper because of it.
Most of us who had good driver's training courses, and/or a modicum of common sense understand the logic and the necessity of the adage...."Drive right...pass left". Now Indiana has made it law.

The bill passed the Indiana House 97-0 and the Senate 29-20.

police will issue $500 tickets to drivers “who fail to move into the right lane if they know, or should reasonably know, another vehicle is overtaking them — even if the other vehicle is exceeding the speed limit.”

traffic flow is usually more important than traffic speed. Left-Lane Hogs trigger road rage and inspire abrupt lane changes and unexpected stops and starts.

Here's hoping Ohio follows suit.

Seems way too subjective to ever enforce. At what point are you considered hogging it?

Not sure if it's law in Ohio but if you are driving in the passing lane in PA, for a prolonged period of time, you will get ticketed.

Any time I'm driving on the interstate and a cop comes along whether stationary on the roadside or moving with traffic, everyone goes into retard mode and drives ten under the speed limit like there's some type of reward for driving slower.

I would assume, like most traffic laws like speed limits and yellow/red lights, the law is there for police to use, but not necessarily enforce to the absolute letter. While technically being able to ticket you for going over the speed limit, they usually give you some leeway. I suspect this would be similar....if you are obviously clogging traffic you can be ticketed.

Great in theory, but won't change a thing. Usually these people are distracted, clueless or both. Rarely will it go on long enough for someone to witness it and for those around them to not react.

I mean, I'm not atypical, but I go 75-85 on the highway at all times, riding the bumper of anyone not doing the same or who won't get out of the lane. Doesn't matter where or when, if you're not going at that speed, don't be in the left lane. The length of time you will follow someone doing 65 in the left lane without abruptly trying to pass them or go around them is probably 15-30 seconds.

After a dozen people speed by you, usually the realization is made. How will this be ticketed?

It's unbelievable how many drivers don't know to change to the left lane when oncoming merging traffic on a highway...
Or how many people don't realize yielding might mean you might have to stop...
Or drive in the right, pass in the left.

agree 100% and the part of your post that pisses me off the most is when I'm in the right lane and can't move over to the left yet some dumb fuck comes down a ramp that has a yield sign at the end of the ramp and flips me off because I don't stop to let him in.

People are too passive when merging. If you're the one who has to yield, find an opening and go. Even if it's before the merge lane actually opens up into the lane. I can't stand people that drive to the very end of the ramp and slow to a near stop and sit there with their blinker on getting over. That kind of shit really slows the flow of traffic because it cascades into all the lanes as the people in the right lane realize they don't want to wait for this idiot to merge in either.

At the same token, what pisses me off is when I'm going 75+ for the purpose of passing someone, and I get tailgated in the process. Yes, I know you're behind me and want to go faster, but I'm trying to pass these 2-3 cars myself. If I get back over now, I'll side swipe them. Please give me a second to pass and get back over at a safe distance.

The same in Ohio I was pulled over on my between Akron and Youngstown going to Grove City for being in the left lane. The Officer pulled me over an told me that he had been following me from distance behind. I explained that if he would have come up on me i would have change to the right lanes, but because this is a open high 76 east, getting late, no other cars around me and lots of deer come out, crossing the highway. My reasoning to stay in the left lane was simple, more time to react to the potential danger of hitting a deer with my family in my truck, longer reationary time for safety. He thanked me for my military service, my common sense and good safe consideration and off we both went. No ticket, no problem, no shooting, no back up required, no struggle, no running, no search of my truck, proper and valid driver, CCW permit and insurance, documents presented properly and most important respect given to the officer and the officer respect given in return. "Sir can I ask why I was pulled over please"
1. Address the officer with respect "Sir"
2. Simple and short, polite question
3. Question followed by the word "please"

I drive to Chicago on what they call the Indiana Expressway.. a lot
There are many time big rigs or triple trailer UPS truck, trying to be passed by other trucks and for miles the two or three trucks are in the left lane never going to pass any time soom. Hate when that happens...

A lot of people who hang out in the left lane are just oblivious....they are talking on their cell phone and just aren't aware of what's going on around....dangerous way to drive.

If you're not doing 60 plus or the speed limit once you're heading to the expressway rethink a different route because you're not ready for big people driving.

I've driven behind many people passing in the left lane doing barely over 70, and taking MILES to slowly pass dozens of cars/trucks in the right-hand lane with no real safe way to get around them.

I also frequently have to pass many people on the right, now, because they're too fucking clueless that they are driving slower than many others and should be in the right-hand lane.

It's scary that they would let someone with judgement like that be a cop.

Its not about judgement .... All about presentation and persuasion. The cop had no intention of giving me a ticket, I gave him an opertuity to walk away with good public relationship for state highway officers.

One of my bigger driving pet peeves. If I have to move from the farthest left lane to the farthest right one in order to get past traffic, some people are just doing it wrong out there on the road.

I don't like to do it because it's unsafe, and I used to get annoyed at people who fly by on the right at first chance (doesn't happen to me, but sometimes the car ahead of me does it). What that's done is cause people to continue driving in the left to FORCE people to pass on the right. You'd think they'd learn that people passing them on the right means they're driving too long and too slow in the left.

I'd guess that maybe 1/2 the cars I come up on in the left lane don't move over now, so after a few seconds I go past on the right.

My other pet peeve is people who move over into the left with a slew of cars coming up, and then proceed to take a minute or more to pass someone driving like 72. For crying out loud, if you move into the left lane to pass then ACCELERATE to pass!!!! Pisses me off when they continue to drive like 71-72 taking miles to pass a string of 10-15 cars on the right, passing up plenty of gaps where they could move over temporarily to let everyone behind pass.

If it were only occasionally that stuff like that happens, it wouldn't be that bad, but on any given trip between Akron and Cleveland on I-77, you can count on running into a lane hog 2 or 3 times. Some are like gut's pet peeve, but alot are worse.
