That's my take as well. Like with Tyrion - WHEN and where Tyrion catches up with Dany isn't all that material, so long as it happens in the books. That's a pretty easy thing for RR to clean up. And Jon battling the White Walkers or not isn't really material, but it plays better in the tv format.

Yeah, I guess the best way of putting things is that there are two major deviations (Sansa being moved to House Bolton and Jamie/Bronn being in Dorne) and a lot of minor deviations made in order to make things more convenient (and/or less bloated) from a story-telling perspective, such as less-important characters either being killed off (Grenn, Pip on the wall for example) or just not being included.

That's a pretty lame way for Jon Snow to "die"...Even lamer to have Melisandre conveniently show up. Although supposedly Jon Snow, not Stannis,was in her visions (and I think this was mentioned in the tv show). Which makes me wonder if she really is powerful and perhaps even sabotaged Stannis, or if she's just an opportunist that got out of dodge (the Stannis smoke monster was real).

I foresee the Shaming Nun being taken for a rough ride (RR style, not Baltimore style) by The Mountain.

I'm guessing they survived. We don't know that Stannis is dead, either. Although Brienne doesn't seem like the type not to do her duty.

This show is starting to piss me off with the circles it goes in. Don't know how to further a plotline? Ah fuck it, just kill the character.

I don't believe Jon is dead. Didn't even phase me because I don't believe it.

What pissed me off about that scene is that the "Klan" killed him. Yeah, yeah they don't trust the Wildlings and have lost friends and family...but you think the White Walkers would fucking change things a little. So blatantly obvious they need all the help they can get and Jon made the right decision - you may not like him but I don't think you're killing him as a traitor.

If they do inject Melisandre into the Jon story line, well that would just suck, too.

You know all the good guys die in this show, right? I also don't think he's dead, especially with melisandre showing up. I actually didn't mind the episode as much as i thought I would, it set up some pretty good plot lines with Cersi, Sansa, Arya, and Danearyus.

Why would injecting her into the Jon storyline suck? How much more of "white walkers are coming" and "we need the wildlings" episodes could they do?
