Anyone own a plot of land they don't actually live on or plan to live on? Once my wife graduates and gets a job in the fall I am going to start looking for a piece of land within an hour of Cincinnati, preferably 5+ acres, mostly wooded with a cabin or old farmhouse, to buy as a weekend getaway property. I took a quick look on a few site and found plenty of properties that would work for me that fall well within my price range. Just curious if anyone has any experience with anything like this.

I previously read about a minor league website owner doing this. Good luck.

A few years ago I wanted some lake property but just could fine what I wanted ....
If all goes will with my retirement, closing the business and now this new job potential offer .. I could start looking again..

My family has a lot. It's nice to hunt and some fish. All kinds of space to shoot guns.

This is a big reason for wanting some land relatively close.

Close to water? What area are you looking? Ohio? Kentucky? Indiana?

I wish I could be relatively close (not 14 hours away) for that too. It's also farmed. My dad and uncle won an award for conservation with it. It's nice to have food plots to help the environment.

We were "green" before green was a thing.

Yes, either close to or on a river, or with a pond and/or creek on the property. And I'm looking at anywhere within an hour radius of Cincinnati so any of the three.

It would be nice to be able to plant some small crops on the land as well. Not sure if I could swing that not being able to visit multiple times per week.

I'd look for more acreage but without the cabin/house. You can get a feel for the land, take a camper, and then decide where you want to build a small abode.

My neighbor never waters his garden, and he gets plenty. I think maintaining on the weekends would be just fine.

Yeah, I am definitely more interested in finding an ideal piece of land (water, wooded, etc) than worrying about it having a cabin already on it. That said, I would settle on fewer acres if it hit everything else on my checklist and had a small cabin.

If I was you Justin, I'd look for some land around Aurora and the river or continue heading more West towards Brown County, Indiana.

Highland Co....good fit for your needs. Near Lynchburg, Leesburg or Mowrystown....all about 45-50 min from big city but no characteristics of the big cities at all.....farm land, creeks, ponds amuck. Lynchburg and Leesburg are maybe a touch nicer but very flat.....outside of Mowrystown has some rolling hills and plenty of woods.

is this the land you eventually plan to become a homesteader on?

Luckily my grandparents have passed down 100+ acres to me and my brother. If y'all want to do some skeet or deer hit me up.

My father died awhile back and in the will, the seven kids inherited parts of the 400 acre farm. I have no use for it so I'm taking a lump sum check for my piece. I will say that it's some prime hunting/trapping land.

I'm not buying the land with the intention of homesteading on it. But I'm also not opposed to eventually homesteading on it.

Thanks, I'll check this area out. Know much about Hillsboro? When I searched for Highland Co a lot of the results that came back were in Hillsboro.
