And it has a nice 29 year gap at the beginningCleveland Buck;1700405 wrote:This chart is poverty among the elderly only. Though it's interesting that poverty among the elderly really hasn't improved in around 40 years either.

The President has scrapped plans to tax 529 plans.

I like the way you think. Either you take the college money (that you have to pay back a portion) and NEVER get any government handout for you or family. Or take government welfare for no more than 5 years.gut;1700402 wrote:What if we give everyone a free 4 years of tuition, room & board and then never give them another handout? That solves the poverty problem, right?

the selfish have saved their 529s. It has been found to be a program that benefits the haves.
Hopefully during the 115th Congress this can be undone and more importantly steps can be taken to establish post secondary education for all.

Those that work, save, and plan are more successful than those that spend their money on cigarettes, alcohol and lottery tickets on the spur of the moment. Who ever would have imagined that?isadore;1700763 wrote:the selfish have saved their 529s. It has been found to be a program that benefits the haves.

Are you still working on the plan to move to Denmark or Finland? They are great places, but no one wants to live there.

gosh a ruddies, so nice to hear from the opinions of a self righteous puritan. But greed, selfish are which you prefer to endorse rather than attack. You know you actually can find alcohol abuse and gambling addiction in the upper quintiles. They just the resources to cover their sins. But you prefer any excuse to punish the poor and deny them opportunity.Al Bundy;1700782 wrote:Those that work, save, and plan are more successful than those that spend their money on cigarettes, alcohol and lottery tickets on the spur of the moment. Right. With the average contribution like $150/month, and the average 529 just over $20k, it's a safe bet the majority are very middle class savers that have sacrificed to set that money aside. Exactly the people Isadore pretends to be for, but as it turns out he's only interested in taking from anyone that has something to take.Al Bundy;1700782 wrote:Those that work, save, and plan are more successful than those that spend their money on cigarettes, alcohol and lottery tickets on the spur of the moment. I'm not endorsing or attacking anyone. People in this country have the power to make their own decisions. They just need to be prepared to live with the consequences of those decisions. There many people who start off poor and live a great life because of their decisions. There are also many people who start off rich and live a terrible life because of their decisions.isadore;1700785 wrote:gosh a ruddies, so nice to hear from the opinions of a self righteous puritan. Why is greed continuously addressed on this topic????? Is it any less greedy to want others to pay for your services than it is to want to keep from paying for others? This proposal is not going to be put in to place. It won't even be brought to a vote as an attachment to a bill. It's not even on the radar screen of the legislative body. It was just white noise by the Executive Office.

Federal Reserve’s Survey of Consumer Finances, said that more than 70 percent of the account balances for 529 plans and another option known as Coverdell Education Savings Accounts are held by families with incomes over $200,000.gut;1700787 wrote:Right. It is so selfish to care for one's kids and family by putting funds into a 529.
I can give Mr. Gosh access to my student loan debt if he wants...then he can be "fair" and help me be "socially mobile" with allowing me to utilize my income freely. Deal?

lol, do you read what you write. You consistently attack and putdown those less fortunate. gosh a ruddies those greedy, selfish poor people. The 529 program was an example of government welfare for the well to do.Con_Alma;1700815 wrote:Why is greed continuously addressed on this topic????? Why don't the supporters of this plan pool their resources and start a non-profit to fund community college for whoever wants it? Nothing is stopping them from doing so; isadore why don't you take the charge?

Just an FYI for those that care, Mr. Gosh has not sent me a PM or offered to help pay for my student loans that are crippling me and keeping me from "social mobility."

How many of those where it is "beyond the resource" have cable tv, cell phones, and go out to eat? If they put away $50 a month compounding at 7% interest, they would have over $21,000 by the time the kid turns 18. That is more than the average 529 account has. That is less than $2 per day.isadore;1700826 wrote:a tax dodge for the well to do. one that is beyond the resource of the lower quintiles
